Olympic football tips, 04/08/2012
My Olympic tips have been disastrous thus far due to unbelievably poor showings by Spain and Uruguay, so hopefully this is where we start making our money back. Bad luck can only last so long, right?
Japan v Egypt
Japan have played intelligent, organised and clinical football throughout the tournament, but with the experienced Mohamed Aboutrika pulling the strings from midfielder and the ever prolific Mohamed Salah notching goals for fun, Egypt will be no pushovers. In the group stage Japan snuck two 1-0 wins whilst Egypt found the net for fun, averaging two goals per game, so we’re in for a really interesting contest. I fancy that we’ll see more than one goal, but no more than three, so my best bet for this game will be exactly 2 or 3 goals scored at 10/11.
Mexico v Senegal
For me, this is the most exciting and evenly contested quarter-final in the tournament. I expected Senegal to be a strong side, but I think how strong they’ve actually been has taken everyone by surprise. 20-year-old Moussa Konaté has been scoring for fun and currently leads the race for the Golden Boot with four goals, but I have a feeling that this will be his last chance to add to that tally. I expected Mexico to be rivalled by Switzerland for the top spot in Group B, but Switzerland underwhelmed throughout and Mexico grabbed the chance to top the group with both hands with some excellent performances. This will be a very close tie which could easily result in a draw inside 90 minutes, so my money would be on Mexico to progress to the next round at 4/6.
Great Britain v South Korea
I fully expect ‘Team GB’ *shudder* to do us proud and progress to the next round here and, it may just be optimism, but I can see us winning by a couple of goals. Whilst a bet on GB to win at 11/10 is good, my money will be on a GB -1 handicap win at 10/3. Going by our previous performances, a 2-0 or 3-1 victory doesn’t seem at all implausible – we’ve been dominating possession, defending well and are currently the third highest scorers in the tournament behind Brazil and Egypt.
Brazil v Honduras
Brazil win. Easy.
There’s little value to be found, but Neymar to score anytime at 8/11 is good. He’s been as short as 1/2 in previous games. Brazil to score 3 or more at 4/5 is good, too – they’ve scored 3 goals in every game so far.
Best bets summary
Japan v Egypt – exactly 2 or 3 goals scored at 10/11.
Mexico to progress to the next round at 4/6.
GB to win at 11/10 or a -1 handicap win at 10/3.
Brazil to score 3 or more at 4/5.
Neymar to score anytime at 8/11.
