With a new owner at the helm, Chelsea look to go on a summer transfer splurge. However, with the likely loss of the majority of their starting backline, there will be certain areas of the pitch with more urgent replacements needed.
5 Players Chelsea Should Sign this Summer
5 Players Chelsea Should Sign this Summer
Jules Kounde - Sevilla
French defender Jules Kounde is set to become the first signing of the Todd Boehly era at Chelsea. The 23-year-old, who currently plays his football in Spain with Sevilla, was heavily linked with a move to Chelsea in the summer of 2021, but the transfer just fell short, with the revelation of Trevoh Chalaboh in the opening stages of the season not helping.
However, the interest is reportedly just as intense this summer as it was last. Kounde has had a good season with Sevilla, with whom he’s made 31 appearances, scoring twice and assisting once.
In La Liga this season, Kounde and Sevilla have kept 16 clean sheets and conceded the fewest number of goals in the league - just 30, conceding an average of 0.81 goals per game. Kounde has also won 150 aerial duels and 52 tackles in the 2021/22 season, making him a good candidate for an Antonio Rudiger replacement.
Presnel Kimpembe - PSG
World Cup winner and current PSG centre-back Presnel Kimpembe has also been tipped for a potential move to Stamford Bridge this summer. This move would also see the Frenchman reunited with former manager Thomas Tuchel, who coached him during his time at the club.
Kimpembe has made 29 appearances in Ligue 1 this season, with a PSG side that won the league by 15 points and only lost four games all campaign. Along with this, Kimpembe has been a large figure in a PSG backline that has 12 clean sheets and only 36 goals conceded this season, this equating to an average of 0.92 goals conceded per game.
The Frenchman’s individual stats also give a good account of his talents. Kimpembe averages 1.3 interceptions, 2.5 clearances and 1.1 tackles in Ligue 1. The addition of such an established and proven centre back could be crucial for Tuchel’s defensive rebuild.
Jose Gimenez - Atletico Madrid
Jose Gimenez is another potential Chelsea target hailing from Spain, this time Atletico Madrid. Like Kounde, Gimenez was heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2021, but the 27-year-old stayed in Madrid.
Gimenez was an integral part of the Atletico Madrid defence that won La Liga in the 2020/21 season, and the one that currently sits third with one game to go. The Uruguayan has played 24 games for Atletico in La Liga this season, also managing a goal and an assist. Atletico have 12 clean sheets this season and have conceded 42 goals - an average of 1.14 goals per game.
However, in their title-winning season, Atletico and Gimenez were more than defensively solid. 18 clean sheets in La Liga and only 25 goals conceded, an average of 0.66 goals per game. Gimenez also made 21 appearances in this campaign, showing he is yet another solid defensive option for The Blues.
Ousmane Dembele - Barcelona
Another reunion could be possible for Thomas Tuchel if The Blues manage to bring Ousmane Dembele to the Bridge. The French winger was given his debut at Borussia Dortmund by the current Chelsea boss, where he went on to score ten goals and provide 22 assists in his 50 appearances.
Dembele’s big-money move to Barcelona has been severely hindered by the Frenchman’s frequent injuries. However, Dembele does have 32 goals and 34 assists in his 149 appearances for Barcelona, along with two La Liga titles and a Spanish Super Cup.
Dembele also has a World Cup under his belt and has been able to register the most assists in La Liga this season with 13 assists in 20 games, a whole 11 games less than Karim Benzema who sits second. This creativity is something that would strengthen Chelsea and may even be able to unlock the goalscoring capabilities of Romelu Lukaku.
Alessio Romagnoli - AC Milan
Current AC Milan captain Alessio Romagnoli is a free transfer that Chelsea could capitalise on in order to bolster their defence next season following the summer departures. The 27-year-old has played his entire career in Italy and has won the Italian Super Cup, but could swap Milan for London.
Romagnoli has made 16 appearances for AC Milan this season, with the Rossoneri two points clear of bitter rivals Inter Milan with just one game to go in Serie A. In just under 1400 minutes, Romagnoli has averaged 1.3 tackles per game, 1.1 interceptions per game and 2.4 clearances per game.
Injuries have somewhat thwarted his season, but despite missing some fixtures, Romagnoli has always been a defensive mainstay for the Rossoneri and would be a logical transfer for The Blues.
