Keith Hill set to leave Bolton

Bolton Wanderers manager Keith Hill and assistant manager David Flitcroft will not renew their contracts at the club when they expire in June. The Whites will be plying their trade in League Two next season after relegation out of League One and the cash-strapped club have seen staff across the board let go to save money, including CEO Emma Beaugeard.

Now, with Hill soon to depart, we take a look at the Sky Bet candidates to step in and guide Bolton through League Two for next season.

*Caretaker and interim managers completing at least 10 competitive games will be deemed the permanent manager

Nigel Clough Bolton Odds

Veteran EFL manager Nigel Clough leads the way at the top of the list for the next Bolton manager at 5/2. The 54-year-old is seen as the ideal candidate to take the helm due to his vast experienced throughout League One, Two and the Championship.

Clough is most famous for his legendary efforts with Burton Albion across a 16-year stint where he played on the field and stepped out as a manager. The former Sheffield United boss began his managerial career with Burton back in 1998, leaving the club in 2009 for Derby County, but eventually rejoined the club in 2015.

However, Clough recently stepped down as manager at Burton due to financial crisis at the club. Now, after 78 wins from 228 games and promotion from League One into the Championship, the experienced manager is a free agent once more and top of the list over at Bolton.

Indeed, he remains the favourite and, in truth, the most sensible option to get the club back into League One.

David Lee Bolton odds

David Lee bagged 16 league goals across 147 league appearances for Bolton and established himself as a club legend as part of the 'White Hot' team that toppled both Merseyside giants and Arsenal in the FA Cup of 1993.

The former player is currently the Assistant Academy Director for the club and would, therefore, be the sensible option with regards to the brutal financial struggles at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Lee has yet to step into a managerial role since retiring from playing back in 2001, but after developing youth talent with Bolton for the last 12 years, the Englishman is certainly capable of building a senior squad around the younger names.

Now, to take the helm as the first-team boss, Lee is a 4/1 second favourite.

Stephen Reid odds

Steven Reid is now into his fifth year of retirement from playing and at just 39 the former West Bromwich Albion right-back is already establishing himself with the Scotland national team.

The ex-Burnley man is a part of the backroom staff with Scotland which only adds to an already decent CV as a coach at such a young age. Reid has also been a first-team coach at both Reading and Crystal Palace, before he stepped in to assist caretaker manager Jimmy Shan at West Brom.

Now, Reid is the third favourite to become the next Bolton boss with odds of 4/1. Whilst Reid doesn't have any managerial experiences and sees himself as a coach right now, stepping up to the plate with the Whites might be the perfect start for his career.

Reid will bring with him valuable coaching knowledge as well as the experience of playing in the lower tiers throughout his time at Millwall.

Ryan Lowe

Ryan Lowe has been making a name for himself down in League Two in recent seasons and the 41-year-old would undoubtedly be one of the better options for Bolton.

The former Bury manager won 32 games from the 75 he managed at the club where Lowe won promotion to League One. Lowe would then depart Bury for Plymouth Argyle after impressing with the Shakers over the space of three seasons and now, the Pilgrims' manager has won promotion back to League One with Plymouth.

Subsequently, it is tough to see Lowe leaving this job with a newly promoted side, just as Bolton move down a tier and still face financial worries each day. With this said, Lowe is 5/1 to take the helm at Bolton and if he does so, it will unquestionably be a jackpot for the Whites, as the Plymouth boss brings with him valuable experience in getting out of League Two.

  • Dean Holden - 20/1
  • Neil Warnock - 33/1
