Nigel Adkins is the bookies favourite at present. The 56-year-old hasn’t had a job since leaving Hull City in the summer of 2019, as he didn’t agree with the Tigers club vision.
Akins has plenty of experience in and around League One, as in the 2006/07 and 2008/09 seasons he managed to earn promotions to the Championship with Scunthorpe United.
However, his best and most notable time as a manager came back in his Southampton days, as alike Charlton, the Saints were a sleeping giant in League One and hadn’t played in the Premier League for a sustained period of time. Following his appointment at St Mary’s, he managed to guide Southampton back to the Premier League via back-to-back promotions in 2010/11 and 2011/12, utilising the young talents which they had such as Adam Lallana and Morgan Schneiderlin along the way.
Adkins is priced at 10/11 to become Charlton’s next manager, and Addicks fans will hope that he can mirror previous successes that he has had in his career at The Valley - Click here to claim this bet in your bet slip!
Caretaker manager Johnnie Jackson is the second favourite to get this role. The former Addicks player who made 247 league appearances for the club took charge of their dramatic 3-2 win over Bristol Rovers in midweek, having come back from 2-0 down to win 3-2. This was just Charlton’s second win in nine matches.
This would be a good move for Jackson, as it would allow him to manage a talented group of players that are capable of getting into the play-off places, he will also have the instant respect of the club’s fans and playing staff, as he is regarded as a legend at The Valley.
The final manager on this list is Michael Laudrup. The 56-year-old Danish man has not had a managerial role since leaving Qatari club Al Rayyan in 2018.
The former Barcelona and Real Madrid star is best remembered for his time at Swansea City where he managed the Swans to their only ever major honour when they beat Bradford City 5-0 in the League Cup final at Wembley in 2013, having navigated their way through tricky opposition such as Liverpool and Chelsea on their way to the final.
It would be a surprise to see Laudrup manage in League One due to the reputation of his name, although perhaps Danish-born businessman Thomas Sangaard could persuade him to join the Addicks.
Laudrup has the odds of 7/1 to make a return to English football with Charlton.
