Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce has been made the bookie’s favourites to be the second Premier League manager to leave his post at 5/4, having overseen his side go over 13 hours without a goal from open play, resulting in the Toon Army not winning any of their last nine matches in all competitions, scoring just four times.

Bruce’s appointment was met with anger and disappointment when he was given the job at St James’ Park back in the summer of 2019, with many of the Newcastle faithful unhappy with Bruce’s links to rivals Sunderland having managed them between 2009 and 2011, as well as believing that this was a significant step backwards from previously having Rafael Benitez managing the club prior to his contract expiry that summer.

Former Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe is the favourite to take the job at St James’ park. The 43-year-old is known for setting his teams up in an attacking manner, which would signal a significantly different style of play at Newcastle to that which their fans have become used to.

Howe has not had a job since leaving Bournemouth following their relegation from the Premier League at the end of last season. He is best known for his time at the Cherries, managing them for 12 years till his departure in 2020, with a one and a half-season spell at Burnley separating his two spells at Dean Court between January 2011 and October 2012. His time at Bournemouth saw him take the Cherries from the bottom of the League Two table to as high as ninth place in the Premier League in 2016/17.

This job would suit the likes of Howe, as Newcastle fans are known for being admirers of attacking football, going back to the 1990s under the likes of Kevin Keegan. Howe’s reputation is certainly worthy enough of getting him another job in the Premier League, having worked miracles at the Vitality Stadium.

Bruce’s predecessor Benitez comes in as the second favourite having left Newcastle following the expiry of his contract in 2019 following three years at the club.

Benitez was a much-loved figure whilst managing Newcastle, as despite being given a tough task of saving the club from relegation in 2015/16, which saw them ultimately drop down the to the Championship, the former Liverpool manager stayed with the Toon Army, overseeing their promotion back to the Premier League, before consolidating their position in the top flight once more on a tight budget.

The Spaniard left St James’ park for Chinese Super League side Dalian Yifang which cited Newcastle owner Mike Ashley criticising Benítez stating that unfair demands were made making it impossible for him to remain as manager of the club. Since then, the former Champions League winning manager has persistently criticised Ashley for not caring about the club enough, but, if he was given a similar budget to what Bruce has had to spend at the club, he could be tempted back to the Premier League to manage a club which he frequently expresses his admiration for.

Next on the list is former Southampton manager Mark Hughes. Hughes’ best times in management came in the late 2000s at Blackburn Rovers and over a five-year spell at Stoke City. In his time at Rovers, he frequently had the Lancashire side competing to try and qualify for the latter European places, whilst at Stoke he achieved three ninth-placed finishes in a row between 2013 to 2016, having taken them away from Tony Pulis’ direct style of football.

However, Hughes also comes at a risk, as he has been sacked at Manchester City, Fulham, Queens Park Rangers, Stoke City and Southampton, with Fulham, QPR and Stoke all being relegated in the season that he was sacked.

Hughes probably wouldn’t be a popular choice at St James’ Park alike former Manchester United teammate Bruce, but as shown in the appointment of the former Sunderland man, the owner of the North East club isn’t scared of making unpopular decisions.

The former Wales manager is priced at 6/1 to take over from Bruce at Newcastle.

Swansea City manager Steve Cooper is next on the list of managers to be considered in the running for the Newcastle job, following a very impressive 18 months at the Welsh club in what is his first senior role in management.

In his first full season in charge in 2019/20, his side managed to reach the play-off semi-finals against all odds, losing 3-2 on aggregate to eventual runners up Brentford. So far this season, the former England youth coach has managed to eclipse what he achieved last season, as the Swans currently sit in second place in the Championship having earned 46 points from 24 matches, seeing them ahead of the likes of Watford and Bournemouth who have managed to keep the majority of the squads which saw them play several years in the Premier League.

This move wouldn’t be a risk for Cooper, as his managerial reputation has significantly grown in the last 18 months, and having worked on a tight budget at the Liberty Stadium, it would be a good platform for him to demonstrate his skills at a higher level.

Former Newcastle United club legend Alan Shearer comes in at 9/1, having only ever previously had one managerial spell, which came in April 2009, where he was surprisingly given the task of saving the Toon Army from relegation despite having no experience of being a manager.

This spell ended in disaster for Shearer, as in eight matches in charge, he picked up just five points, with his sole win coming against local rivals Middlesbrough, which meant that his boyhood club’s 16-year unbroken spell of being in the Premier League was ended. Following this Shearer left his role, and Chris Hughton was given the task of getting Newcastle back into the Premier League of which he did this at the first time of asking.

Of late, a lot of clubs have gone down the inexperienced route, as the likes of Chelsea recently appointed Frank Lampard, whilst Arsenal did the same with Mikel Arteta, so it would be somewhat of a fairytale if Shearer came back to Newcastle and was a success, this could also be a move which could be used as some positive PR by Ashley, so it is one that can’t be ruled out.
