Next Oldham Athletic Manager Odds after Scholes

Who will replace Paul Scholes as the Oldham Athletic manager?

For the second time this season, Oldham Athletic are on the lookout for a new manager after Paul Scholes quit just 31 days after being appointed.

The former Manchester United midfielder, a lifelong supporter of Oldham, was enjoying his first spell as a manager but struggled to make much of an impact in his short spell at Boundary Park. The odds were always against him reaching the play-offs when he took over, but he may have expected to do better than claiming just one win from his seven matches in charge, losing three.

The 44-year-old said that it was with "great regret" that he was walking away from the role in a statement. He also went on to sat that it "became clear that I would not be able to operate as I intended and was led to believe prior to taking on the role."

Moroccan football agent Abdallah Lemsagam is the current owner of Oldham, and has had trouble getting a manager in for the long term with the next appointment set to be his fifth permanent manager since January 2018.

Odds are now available for who the Latics will appoint next and we have taken a look at who is in contention to become the next Oldham Athletic manager.

Pete Wild amongst favourites to be next Oldham manager

As they did last time, Oldham have placed academy manager Pete Wild in temporary charge as they look for a permanent successor to Scholes. But could Wild be the man they turn to long term? The bookmakers certainly believe that it is a possibility, with BetVictor currently placing him as joint favourite to get the job with odds of 4/1.

Last time he did a pretty good job as caretaker manager, taking charge of eight matches in total and winning exactly half of those. He also guided the Latics into the fourth round of the FA Cup, securing a mightily impressive victory away against Premier League outfit Fulham in doing so.

With the club currently sitting mid-table in League Two, 10 points adrift of the play-offs and 15 points above the relegation zone there looks to be little left to play for in the final nine games of the season. With that in mind, they may well let Wild remain in charge until the end of the season an should he impress and get some good results then it may well be that the job is his to lose.

Mick Priest, Peter Clarke and Steve Evans also in the frame to be next Oldham manager?

The man who is joint favourite with Wild and therefore also 4/1 to be handed the reigns at Oldham is Mick Priest. He was brought in alongside Scholes as his assistant manager, but has remained with the club following the former England midfielder's departure.

He is an extremely experienced coach, spending time abroad at clubs such as IK Start in Norway and Maccabi Haifa in Israel. However, he has never been a first team manager which could mean that it would be something of a risk giving him the job.

Peter Clarke is the next name on the list with odds of 6/1, but again this would mean the Latics going down the inexperienced manager route. The 37-year-old is the current club captain and has been an ever present in the first team, making 34 league appearances. He hasn't coached at all yet though, and surely both Wild and Priest would be higher up the pecking order in terms of people already at the club considering their greater experience. Clarke would be something of a strange appointment in our opinion.

The most experienced manager at the top of the betting market is the former Rotherham United manager Steve Evans. The 56-year-old has been out of work since being relieved of his duties as manager of Peterborough United earlier this year, but is believed to be seeking out a new job. Whether he would want to drop down to League Two again after leaving Mansfield Town to jump up a league to join the Posh remains to be seen, but there is no doubting that he has the best CV of the top candidates.

Evans has won promotion from League Two with Rotherham, as well as also going up in League One and has won 414 matches as a manager. He was also doing a reasonable job with Peterborough, who were well in the hunt for a League One play-off place when he was dismissed. BetVictor are currently offering odds of 8/1 for the Glaswegian to become the next manager in the dugout at Boundary Park.
