Next QPR Manager Odds after McClaren

Who will replace Steve McClaren as the next QPR manager?

QPR are looking for a new manager after parting company with Steve McClaren. The former England boss was relieved of his duties following the R's disappointing 2-1 home defeat against lowly Bolton Wanderers.

McClaren had only been in charge at the West London club since the beginning of the season, and in total managed just 46 fixtures. In that time he managed to pick up 16 wins and nine draws whilst suffering 21 defeats.

After a poor start to the season which included a 7-1 battering at the hands of West Brom, QPR had turned things around and between the end of August and Boxing Day they picked up 11 wins and four in 20 games to climb into play-off contention.

The new year saw their form turn once against though, and a run of just one win and 10 defeats in 13 matches has seen them plummet back down the Championship table. The 57-year-old leaves Rangers sat in 17th place, eight points above the relegation zone.

So with McClaren now gone, who are the bookmakers tipping to replace him in the managerial hot seat at Loftus Road?

Tim Sherwood favourite to become next QPR manager

The early favourite with bookmakers to replace McClaren is a man who has not been in management since the 2015/16 season in Tim Sherwood. The 50-year-old was last in charge of Aston Villa in the Premier League, but was sacked after winning just 10 of his 28 games in charge.

His only other role was as a caretaker manager at Tottenham Hotspur where he also took charge of 28 fixtures, coming away from White Hart Lane with a slightly better record of 14 wins. He also had a brief stint as director of football at Swindon Town in the 2016/17 season, but left after they were relegated to League Two.

Many have questioned Sherwood's managerial capabilities in the past. So far in his career he has appeared to be a good motivator who gets results initially, but not as astute tactically and long-term struggles. That is what happened whilst at Villa, he initially picked up some good results and even got them to the FA Cup final, but managed them to just one win and eight defeats in their opening 10 fixtures of the 2015/16 season which ultimately led to him being sacked.

Could QPR be set to give him another crack at management as he looks to prove peoples perceptions of him wrong? Bookmakers certainly think it's likely with him being odds-on at 8/15 to be named the next manager of the R's.

Other names in the frame to take over at QPR

The second favourite with bookmakers is Mark Warburton. The former Brentford and Rangers manager has been out of work since leaving Nottingham Forest last season, but does have some good Championship experience. He took the Bees into the play-offs in their first season in the second tier back in the 2014/15 season and had them playing an excellent brand of attacking football.

He also won both the Scottish Championship and Challenge Cup whilst at Rangers and has 109 wins from his 197 games as a manager, giving him a very respectable win ratio of 55.33%. Warburton's odds to take over at Loftus Road are currently 7/2 with Sky Bet.

Gareth Ainsworth is the other contender according to bookies, who are pricing him at 5/1 to get the job. The 45-year-old has been managing Wycombe Wanderers since 2012 and has done a good job with the Chairboys, winning the LMA Manager of the Year award in 2015 and guiding the club to promotion from League Two last season.

He of course has an affinity with QPR having played for them between 2003 and 2010, and he has even taken charge of 11 matches as a caretaker manager in the past. Could now be the time for him to leave Wycombe and step up the English footballing pyramid? Sky Bet are offering odds of 5/1 for the former midfielder to rejoin QPR in a managerial capacity.
