Rangers are on the lookout for a new manager following the sacking of Michael Beale in the aftermath of their 3-1 loss to Aberdeen at Ibrox.

Beale was a popular choice to become manager at the club when he was appointed back in November 2022 to replace Giovani van Bronckhorst, having been seen as a major factor in the club’s successes under Steven Gerrard, however, after a promising start to life as manager of Rangers, things turned sour quickly at the start of the current campaign as the Ibrox club sits seven points behind Celtic after just eight matches.

Overall, Beale’s record as Rangers manager stands at 31 wins and four draws from 43 matches, equating to a 72% win percentage.

Former AS Monaco manager Philippe Clement has emerged as the favourite to become next Rangers manager.

The 49-year-old managed the side from the Principality between January 2022 and June 2023, winning 39 and drawing 18 of his 76 games in charge, equating to a win percentage of 51.3%.

Clement’s best spell as a manager noticeably came between June 2019 and January 2022 when he coached Club Brugge, leading the Belgian Pro League outfit to the 2019/20 and 2020/21 league titles, meaning that he had won Belgian’s top-flight three seasons in a row following his success with Genk in 2018/19.

John Eustace is also a candidate for the vacancy at Ibrox following his shock dismissal as Birmingham City manager.

The 43-year-old had done a fairly decent job at St Andrew’s, having taken over from Lee Bowyer in the summer of 2022. When Eustace started the job with Blues, they were predicted to finish in the Championship relegation zone, however, they ended up finishing 17th, nine points above the drop zone with their best points tally since 2016.

Birmingham were finally taken over in the summer of 2023, meaning that Eustace had adequate transfer funds to make an exciting squad, which he did, acquiring the likes of Ethan Laird, Sariki Dembele and more, which resulted in a good start to the season, as City sat sixth in the table at the time of Eustace’s departure.

Ex-Rangers defender Kevin Muscat was the initial early favourite for the job at Ibrox, having been said to want talks with the club over the vacancy.

The 50-year-old former Australia international is currently the manager of J-League outfit Yokohama Marinos where he managed to win the league title last season, as well as the 2023 Japanse Super Cup.

Muscat has had a decent managerial career, having also coached Melbourne Victory to the A-League Championship in both 2015 and 2018, as well as leading them to the A-League Premiership title in 2015 along with the FFA Cup.

Current Rangers caretaker manager Steven Davis is also in the frame, with the Northern Ireland midfielder potentially taking charge of their matches against Aris Limassol in the UEFA Europa League, as well as their away match at second-place St. Mirren before the international break.

These will be big tests for the 38-year-old Northern Irishman and if Rangers come out with two victories, could there be a chance of seeing him land the job on a permanent basis?

Davis will have a unanimous level of support from Rangers fans in general, having made 359 appearances for the Gers while winning 10 trophies with the club.

London-born AZ Alkmaar manager Pascal Jansen is the second favourite for the Rangers job at present having impressed in what is just his second managerial job to date.

The 50-year-old initially coached Jong PSV between 2015 and 2017 before becoming Alkmaar manager in 2020 where he has exceeded expectations, winning 87 and drawing 23 of his 145 matches to date, equating to a win percentage of 60%.

At present, AZ Alkmaar are second in the Dutch Eredivisie, only behind PSV by two points after seven games following six wins and one draw. Jansen has managed to lead Alkmaar to impressive third, fifth and fourth-place finishes during his time at the club and reached the semi-finals of last season’s Europa Conference League where they were narrowly beaten by West Ham United.

Former Rangers midfielder Derk McInnes has also been considered for the role at Ibrox following good managerial spells at St Johnstone, Aberdeen and Kilmarnock.

McInnes has managed to win three trophies during his managerial career, starting with the Scottish First Division with St Johnstone back in 2008/09, before winning the Scottish League Cup at Aberdeen in 2013/14 and the Scottish Championship during the 2021/22 season while in charge of current club, Kilmarnock.

McInnes has a good reputation in Scotland, having put Aberdeen back on the map during his spell as manager of the Pittodrie club between April 2013 and March 2021, leading them to several second-place finishes while managing to lead the club to four domestic cup finals.

Could Frank Lampard be about to make a return to management with Rangers following his disastrous interim spell in charge of Chelsea last season?

The 45-year-old took charge of 11 games last season at Stamford Bridge, winning just once, while his previous spell before that between July 2019 and January 2021 saw Chelsea win just 44 of his 84 games in charge.

Lampard also managed Everton from January 2022 and January 2023, helping to keep the Toffees up in his first half a season in charge before regressing, finishing with a 27% win percentage at Goodison Park.

Before this, he had been manager of Derby County for one season, reaching the Championship play-off final in 2018/19, however, the Rams were beaten by Aston Villa and Lampard left Pride Park to join Chelsea.
