Next Scotland Manager Odds after McLeish

Bookmakers identify potential candidates for next Scotland manager

Five wins and seven defeats from twelve games makes for a topsy-turvy record for Alex McLeish as Scotland manager, and it sounds like it could be enough to see him handed his marching orders, with a completely against-the-odds defeat to Kazakhstan being an especially embarrassing result.

Since the humiliating loss at one of the world's lowest ranked international teams, Scotland bounced back with a measly 2-0 win over San Marino, leaving the team booed off the pitch by travelling fans, and the Scottish FA in a position where relieving Alex McLeish of his duties looked like the most sensible option.

Mostly Scottish candidates are given a price to replace the former Aston Villa and Birmingham City manager. BetVictor were one of the first bookmakers to release their own next Scotland manager odds, providing a price on over thirty popular names, where we've been able to get a grasp over who the most likely coaches are.

David Moyes and Scot Gemmill leading the race to replace Alex McLeish

Currently both given odds of 3/1 on BetVictor to become next Scotland manager, Scot Gemmill and David Moyes are neck and neck in their efforts to replace Alex McLeish at the helm. Choosing between either manager would also see the Scottish Football Association taking a very different route to how the national side will be run in future months.

Although David Moyes has been far from formidable since leaving Everton in 2013, it would be a massive statement for the Scottish FA to appoint the former Manchester United, Real Sociedad, Sunderland and West Ham United head coach, as he at least holds the experience of a Premier League manager, ranking him as one of the more promising candidates from most names on the list. The only concern would be that he's more likely to return to Everton instead, but that depends on how tempting the Scotland job is to him.

Given an equal chance of sealing the Scotland manager job, Scot Gemmill is a less exciting prospect but a potentially safer one, as he's been head coach of the Scotland U21 team since 2016. His record hasn't been astonishing for the Scotland U21s but his understanding of the players and the current setup could be beneficial if he were to step into the role of Scotland manager.

Former Scotland manager Gordon Strachan second favourite

Following closely behind Moyes and Gemmill, there's a surprisingly short 4/1 price for Gordon Strachan to return to the role despite stepping down as Scotland manager back in 2016 after failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

Achieving nineteen wins and nine draws from forty games, Gordon Strachan wasn't a phenomenal man at the helm but he certainly got the best out of his players and showed more quality than Alex McLeish has been able to during his tenure. It's assumed that Scottish football fans would be happy with Strachan returning to the job, especially as he would be preferable to Alex McLeish keeping his place.

Two options that appear before odds reach the 10/1 mark are Kilmarnock manager Steve Clarke and recent Scotland caretaker manager Malky Mackay, who are both priced at 8/1. Steve Clarke has been linked to the Fulham job as well as seeing several ties with Celtic after the departure of Brendan Rodgers. His options are running short due to Celtic opting for Neil Lennon and Fulham looking likely to keep Scott Parker in charge even if they fall back down to the Championship as expected.

Past controversies have made life difficult for Malky Mackay. That being said, he was handed an opportunity to return to the spotlight with Scotland in 2017, losing his only game in charge during a period as caretaker manager, where he bridged the gap between the departure of Gordon Strachan and the appointment of Alex McLeish. Mackay has a point to prove and could end up being a real coup, especially with already being a member of the Scottish Football Association.

More managers moving into the frame on BetVictor

Former Scotland managers and notable Scottish club managers in general appear several times in BetVictor's market. Derek McInnes is priced at 10/1, coming as no real surprise after being impressive in charge of Aberdeen and memorably turning down the Sunderland job in favour of remaining at Pittodrie Stadium.

Odds of 12/1 are handed to Celtic caretaker manager Neil Lennon and former Scotland manager Craig Levein, followed by a 14/1 price for overachieving Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill. Preston manager Alex Neil is currently at 16/1, with both Sunderland manager Jack Ross and Ipswich Town manager Paul Lambert being set at 20/1.

The rest of the list is made up of managers handed a 25/1 price and a 33/1 price, presenting a strong chance of a lot of changes occurring in future weeks based on how the story unfolds. It's fair to admit that most - if not all - of these names are far from being anywhere near contention for the role.

Michael Appleton, Steve Evans, Slaven Bilic, Gary Rowett, Gary Monk, Lee Johnson, Walter Smith, Joe Jordan, Jurgen Klinsmann, Sam Allardyce, Stuart McCall, Alan Pardew, James McFadden, Ally McCoist, Slavisa Jokanovic, Brian McDermott and Mark Warburton are priced at 25/1, while Graeme Souness, Peter Grant, Gary McAllister and Paul Heckingbottom are priced at 33/1.

It's hard to identify the perfect man for the Scotland job, not helped by how difficult a job it's been by all recent Scotland managers. The squad is nowhere near the level and quality of England, with Andrew Robertson, Kieran Tierney, Ryan Fraser, Scott McTominay, John McGinn and James Forrest being the only notable exceptions.

Possessing less world class players makes it difficult to envisage Scotland being any stronger under any other manager, so the Scottish FA are pitted with a massive challenge as they hope to take a new direction in their next managerial appointment, with the odds indicating that they could be forced to choose between an experienced Scottish manager, or one that has sufficient knowledge over their international setup.
