Next Southend Manager Odds After Sol Campbell

Chris Powell Southend

Adam Barrett and Kevin Maher lead the way

With Sol Campbell having left his role as Southend manager, there are a wide variety of names in contention for the next Southend manger.

However, at the top of the Paddy Power odds list is Adam Barret and Kevin Maher at 3/1. Barrett, who left the Seasiders' are in 2017, played for the club in two stints totalling eight years and 338 appearances.

The ex-Southend defender has been with Millwall this past year as the caretaker manager for a short while, before moving into a role as the first-team coach where he remains to this day.

Also in the running at 3/1, Maher, is currently at Bristol Rovers as a first-team coach and he would certainly be a sensible option for the club to take on. Maher worked as the U21 and U23 boss for three years at Southend and since moving to coaching roles at Chelmsford City and Bristol, the club's former midfielder has become much more experienced.

Both men are priced at 3/1 to become the next Southend manager and either would be a sensible option.

Darren Currie

Just behind Barrett and Maher is Barnet boss Darren Currie at a 4/1 price. Currie has been fighting to get his side in the National League play-offs all season long and just about made it thanks to the cancellation of the division.

With this said, it's unlikely to see the Barnet boss make the move anytime soon, although, in the long term, Southend will surely try to acquire the younger manager if all else fails.

The 45-year-old doesn't have any managerial experience inside the Football League and, in truth, Currie's record isn't that appealing with Barnet, either. Since taking the job on as an initial caretaker boss, only 28 wins from 73 fixtures have come his way, but this has got them into the play-offs.

At 4/1, however, there is a chance the Barnet boss makes the move down south. However, Southend will surely want to chase somebody with more experience and a better record.

Craig Fagan

As a slight outsider, Craig Fagan could well make the move to become the next manager at Roots Hall. Fagan is the current head coach for the club's U23 side and has recently led the club to five wins from six in the Central League.

The ex-Bradford City forward is still only 37 and similar to others mentioned on this list, Fagan remains extremely inexperienced. Since hanging up the boots in 2015, the current U23s boss joined Hull City's Academy as a coach before he moved to the Seasiders to replace fellow candidate for the senior manager spot, Maher.

Fagan is rightfully so the outsider at 6/1, as he is far from experienced in a managerial role in the professional game. And, at 37, perhaps it's a little too soon for him.

Paul Tisdale

Moving onto another outsider, but one who could certainly be in the running: Paul Tisdale.

The 47-year-old is vastly experienced throughout the Football League, having managed Exeter City for 12 years, Tisdale became the longest-serving manager in the Football League at one stage.

Within this long stint as the Exeter boss, he managed to win 241 games from 626 fixtures. This also equated to a League Two runners-up spot in the 2008/09 season, a year after Tisdale promoted the club into the Football League.

Through this back-to-back promotion into League One, the Englishman won LMA Manager of the Year for the 2008/09 campaign.

Tisdale would then move onto become the manager at Milton Keynes Dons but left the role by mutual consent after just one year following the club's worst start in history under his leadership.

The former Exeter boss is now out of management and Tisdale is without question the wisest choice on this ist for Southend, considering his impressive CV.

Steven Reid, Nigel Clough, Terry McPhillips, Chris Powell in with a shout

Since hanging up the boots in 2015, Steven Reid's name has been mentioned amongst a variety of coaching roles. The former West Ham United man is currently working with Scotland as part of their backroom staff, not long after Reid earned some vital experience as a coach with Reading, Crystal Palace and AFC Wimbledon.

Similarly to Fagan, Reid is relatively inexperienced as a head coach and his 10/1 price is pretty well justified.

Nigel Clough is also mentioned in Paddy Power's odds after he left his role at Burton Albion due to financial concerns in the current state of the world. Clough has a vast amount of experience throughout the Championship and League One and will no doubt be a sensational addition to a struggling Southend side.

However, Clough's eyes might be set a little higher than a League One club fighting relegation and at 10/1, the ex-Sheffield United boss remains an outsider for the manager's role with the Seasiders.

Terry McPhillips is another outsider for the next Southend boss at 12/1. McPhillips is out a managerial role having left Blackpool as he has no intent in becoming a member of the club's long-term future.

Ex-Southend boss Chris Powell is also in the running at 12/1, but he remains an outsider after this poor spell with the club last time out. From 66 games, Powell won just 24.
