Next Tottenham Hotspur Manager Odds

Antonio Conte’s tumultuous time in charge of Tottenham finally ended at the start of April, when the news that the Italian manager had left the club by mutual consent broke in the media.

There are just six games of the season left to go, such was the toxicity of the Tottenham dressing room, that chairman Daniel Levy made the decision to let Conte go now even though his contract was due to expire at the end of the current campaign anyway. So with the former Chelsea manager now gone, the search for a new permanent manager begins.

Conte’s assistant, Cristian Stellini has taken charge as acting head coach until the end of the season, although there are rumours circulating that he could be sacked after Spurs' humiliating 6-1 loss away at Newcastle United.

So, here are the managers currently being linked with the vacant seat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the start of next season…

Julian Nagelsmann Odds: 5/2

Recently sacked Julian Nagelsmann is the early favourite to land the vacant manager job at Tottenham, with the German himself having recently left Bayern Munich after being sacked by the club.

Bayern bosses reportedly felt that the team had gone backwards in the league (they were second at the time), and that they have not seen enough player development. There were also reported tensions between Nagelsmann and both the squad and club executives over a variety of other things. However, at just 35 years old, Nagelsmann will go on to have a long career in the game and opportunities like the Bayern Munich job will surely come again after he has earned more experience.

Despite his young age, the German had impressed in both of his prior managerial roles at Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig, saving the former from relegation and taking them to the Champions League group stages, and taking the latter all the way to the semi-finals of the same competition in 2020. His managerial record is very impressive at such an age and speaks for itself, while his flexible style of play and training methods have also garnered attention.

One complaint held by many Tottenham players was that Conte’s training sessions were draining and too repetitive – Nagelsmann has received attention for his use of drones to film squad movements, and the installation of a huge videowall on the halfway line of the training ground during his time at Hoffenheim. Now for Tottenham, Nagelsmann does seem like somewhat of a perfect fit, especially at this point in his career. Why not take a risk on the German – his record speaks for itself, and Tottenham have actually looked at him twice previously when looking for a new manager – why not seal the deal this time?

Brendan Rodgers Odds: 4/1

Brendan Rodgers is currently available having departed Leicester City at the start of April in the aftermath of their 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace, with the announcement of his exit coming only hours before Graham Potter’s exit from Chelsea was also confirmed.

When Rodgers left the Foxes, they were sat 19th in the Premier League, but truthfully, the writing was on the wall when Leicester failed to pick up a win in their opening seven league matches. Further defeats to Blackburn and Newcastle in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup respectively ensured that there would be no cup success for Rodgers’ squad this season.

Instead, the Northern Irishman leaves the club with them in a relegation fight and his reputation dented. But he is still ultimately a fine manager, and would be a good appointment for many other mid-table clubs where he can start afresh. It is important to remember the success he had in the Midlands when he led Leicester to FA Cup glory in 2021, as well as having the Foxes firmly in the race for Champions League football in both 2019/20 and 2020/21. They would ultimately end up finishing fifth on the final day of both of those seasons, just missing out on the Champions League’s prestige and riches after suffering damaging defeats to both Manchester United and Tottenham.

It is arguably those failures to clinch Champions League qualification that have led Leicester to this point, with the club now having to rein in their spending in recent years after previous years of high transfer outlays; and Rodgers has ultimately paid the price for his failures, but he will certainly not be bereft of suitors.

Rodgers is a stabilising presence within a dressing room, and has the ability to turn around a team’s fortunes by quickly identifying and coming up with short-term solutions to any problems, all the while slowly transforming his players into a cohesive unit that can go on to play eye-catching football, which we have seen at all three of his previous Premier League clubs. Rodgers would be a smart appointment and a stabilising addition to a Tottenham side that need exactly that after months of chaos.

The odds of Brendan Rodgers joining the Lilywhites are 4/1.

Vincent Kompany Odds: 5/1

Whatever happens over the summer months, Vincent Kompany is certain to be managing in the Premier League next season. The question is, will he still be managing Burnley, or will he be in charge elsewhere?

The former Manchester City defender has done an outstanding job with the Clarets in the Championship this season, as they currently sit top of the table and are 10 points clear of 2nd-place Sheffield United. Promotion back to the top flight is guaranteed, capping off what has been a fantastic first year in England managerial-wise for the Manchester City legend.

But, his stellar work at Burnley will have caught the attention of clubs elsewhere, and there may be Premier League clubs who try to tempt the Belgian to join them this summer. Tottenham could be one club who do so, with several publications reporting that Daniel Levy has been impressed by the work that Kompany has done, and as a result, means that Kompany will be placed on any shortlist of managers by the club hierarchy when it comes to whittling down their choices.

This one is a waiting game ultimately though, as we will have to see whether or not Kompany wants to continue the project he has begun at Burnley, or instead challenge himself by making the step up to a bigger club.

The current odds of the Belgian joining Tottenham are 5/1.

Xabi Alonso Odds: 6/1

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has recently been linked to the job at Tottenham for the start of the 2023/24 season.

The-ex Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder has impressed since joining the Bundesliga outfit on 5th October, having won 17 and drawn seven of his 31 matches in charge, seeing them reach the semi-finals of this season’s Europa League while climbing up the top-flight from 17th to sixth place following the sacking of Gerardo Seoane.

Notably, when Alonso was manager of Real Sociedad B, he won the Spanish third-tier in the 2019/20 season, seeing their second team reach the Spanish Segunda for the first time since 1961/62.

Alonso is priced at 6/1 to make the switch from Leverkusen to Tottenham.

Arne Slot Odds: 10/1

2004 was the last time that a Dutch manager was appointed for the Spurs dugout, with Martin Jol ultimately going on to spend three years at the club. But in current Feyenoord boss Arne Slot, could we potentially see what would be just the second Dutch managerial appointment in the club’s history?

Slot has worked wonders since taking charge of the club at the beginning of the previous campaign, with the Rotterdam-based side currently sat top of the Eredivisie with an eight-point lead on second-place PSV. With just four games of the domestic campaign left to go, Feyenoord are closing in on what would be their first league title since 2017, an achievement that would almost certainly cement Slot with legend status at the club, but it would also surely put his name on the managerial map as ‘one to watch’ as well.

There are other achievements to Slot’s name as well – leading the club all the way to the final of the inaugural UEFA Conference League competition (unfortunately losing to Roma) alongside a third-place league finish in his first season in charge. He has led his side to the semi-finals of the KNVB Cup so far this season (a round they haven’t reached since 2020) and took them to the quarter-finals of this season’s Europa League.

To summarise – a league title nearly won for the first time in six years alongside impressive showings in both domestic and European cup competitions. That is a seriously impressive body of work considering that Slot has only been at the club for two seasons. An exciting manager who has proven himself as possessing the ability to turn a club’s fortunes around, Tottenham really could do a lot worse than the Dutchman.

The current odds of the 44-year-old joining Spurs are 10/1.

Graham Potter Odds: 10/1

Could Graham Potter soon become only the fifth man to have taken the job at both Chelsea and Tottenham? Following in the footsteps of greats like Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, as well as Andre Villas-Boas and Glenn Hoddle, Potter’s name would be added to that very short list were he to accept the vacant job currently on offer in north London.

Potter lasted just under seven months in charge at Stamford Bridge, being relieved of his duties after Chelsea’s loss at home to Aston Villa on the weekend saw the Blues drop into the bottom half of the table. Both Potter and his reputation will have been wounded by how things have played out this season, and it will be tough to predict what his next move will be.

Having seemingly rejected advances from Leicester, Potter will likely make the decision to take some time out from the game considering how stressful the last few months have been for him. The Spurs job would be an enticing proposition and he possesses qualities that would surely see him succeed there.

Ultimately, the job at Stamford Bridge is one of the toughest in world football, and for a relatively inexperienced manager like Potter, it was simply too big for him. Failure was inevitable. But at Tottenham, the expectations are a lot lower, which may work in Potter’s favour.

Having also been touted for his positive style of football while at Brighton, it would be a welcome difference from what the Tottenham faithful have had to endure recently under the likes of Conte and Nuno Espirito Santo. Having also earned praise for his ability to work on a limited budget while at Brighton, that would surely also be something that would be a positive in the mind of the notoriously tight-fisted Daniel Levy.

The odds of the recently sacked Englishman joining Spurs for next season are currently 10/1.

Mauricio Pochettino Odds: 12/1

Probably the name that will excite Tottenham fans the most, the return of Mauricio Pochettino to north London has long been mooted in the press.

The Argentine has been out of work since the summer of 2022, when he was let go by giants PSG after struggling in the French capital. Pochettino failed to get PSG into the latter stages of the Champions League as was his remit, and despite winning some of the first silverware of his managerial career via the 2020/21 Coupe de France and the 2021/22 Ligue 1 title, Pochettino always looked out of his depth at the Parisian side, seeming to struggle with controlling the big personalities and names at the club.

However, a return to the club where he managed to secure top-four finishes in four of his five full seasons (including a second-place finish in 2016/17) and led them to a shock Champions League final in 2019 would be ideal not only for him, but for all other parties involved.

Despite the way his first spell at the club ended, the former Southampton manager is still held in high regard among the fanbase, with his high-energy brand of football a sharp contrast to what fans were subjected to this season under Conte. His appointment would almost certainly have somewhat of a stabilising effect on the club, and he would relish the chance to work with the likes of Harry Kane and Heung-min Son again – players whom he nurtured into producing some of the best form of their careers. Ultimately, the reappointment of the Argentinian would seem to be a match made in heaven for fans, players and the club.

The odds of Pochettino re-joining his former side are currently at 12/1.

Luis Enrique Odds: 14/1

Former Spain and Barcelona manager Luis Enrique could be in line for the potential vacancy at Tottenham.

The 52-year-old left his post as Spain’s national manager after their shock Round of 16 defeat to Morocco at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Memorably, Enrique had guided Spain to the semi-finals stage of Euro 2020, but, was defeated by eventual champions, Italy.

Enrique’s best managerial achievement came when he was manager of Barcelona between May 2014 and May 2017, as he won the treble with the Nou Camp club in the 2014/15 season. During his three-year spell as Barca manager, Enrique won a total of nine major honours.

Enrique is priced at 14/1 to be appointed as Tottenham's manager for the 2023/24 season.

Ange Postecoglou Odds: 16/1

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has been linked with many jobs in the Premier League this campaign, as the Australian continues to impress at Parkhead.

The 57-year-old coach has been a revelation having managed to win the Scottish Premiership and Scottish League Cup in his first season in charge and currently sees his side lie 13 points clear of Rangers after 33 matches this time around while also winning the Scottish League Cup for a second time at the expense of the Hoops' Old Firm rivals.

What would be promising for his chances too is his track record of developing players, such as Kyogo Furuhashi at Celtic and many more, while showing that he has good knowledge of players in obscure leagues, with Tottenham being a club that are known for not splashing out on large transfer fees, perhaps this could be of great benefit.

Prior to his current role, he had several jobs having been manager at youth levels for the Australian national team, before becoming their manager between 2013 and 2017. He also managed to win the A-League Championship twice and Premiership once with Brisbane Roar between 2010 and 2012, as well as the J-League with Yokohoma Marinos in 2019.

Postecoglou is priced at 16/1 to make the switch from Celtic Park to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Roberto De Zerbi Odds: 16/1

Might Daniel Levy elect to replace Tottenham’s recently-departed Italian manager with another Italian? Roberto De Zerbi has been outstanding during his short stint in charge of Brighton and Hove Albion so far, with the Italian arguably having made the Seagulls a better and more threatening side than they were under the leadership of Graham Potter.

The 43-year-old has transformed Brighton from a side that showed promise under Potter as a side that were attempting to control games more and were willing to attack against any side but ultimately failing to do so with any real threat, to a side that is now considered to be one of the best in the top-flight while also playing some of the most eye-catching football in the division, but they now also have the goals to show for all their attacking endeavours this time around.

De Zerbi’s previous fine work at both Sassuolo and Shakhtar Donetsk, combined with his recent work on the south coast, has meant that Tottenham have been impressed with the Italian and therefore want to target him for the job. De Zerbi has had a transformative effect on many of the players in his Brighton squad since joining the club, and with the likes of Heung-min Son and Richarlison both having been badly out of form at Tottenham this season, he would have the opportunity to work his magic on those kinds of players were he to make the move.

A move to Spurs would also mean that De Zerbi would be presented with more resources than he would have received at Brighton, and this would allow him to bring in his own players, which he has not had the opportunity to do so properly as of yet while at Brighton.

With the fine work he has already done on show, Tottenham know that they will be getting a top-quality manager if they are to appoint him. The only question is, can De Zerbi be tempted to make a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium?

The current odds of the former Shakhtar Donetsk manager joining the Lilywhites are 16/1.

Ruben Amorim Odds: 16/1

Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim has been among the most highly touted managers in recent months, having been linked with a series of high-profile jobs, such as that of the Portugal national team, Chelsea and Manchester United prior to the arrival of Erik ten Hag.

The 38-year-old has had an impressive start to life as a manager, having won four honours in nearly three seasons at Sporting Lisbon, including their first league title in 19 years during the 2020/21 campaign.

Prior to his time at Sporting, Amorim managed Braga’s B team, winning eight and drawing two of 11 matches, before taking over the senior side in December 2019, overseeing ten wins and one draw in 13 matches which included a Taca da Liga triumph in 2019/20 - this saw him attract interest from various suitors, including current employers, Sporting.

Amorim is priced at 16/1 to be Conte's long-term successor.
