Another manager who is in contention for the hot seat at Sunderland is former Watford boss Nigel Pearson.
The biggest success stories for Pearson have come at Leicester City over two managerial spells at the King Power Stadium. Ironically his first achievement with Leicester, was his promotion from League One, having beaten Leicester to staying up the previous season in the Championship whilst caretaker manager of Southampton. Despite Leicester’s promotion, following a takeover at the club, Pearson became out of favour with the board and left in 2010.
Just over a year later after leaving the club, Leicester had been taken over by a new owner in the popular Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha. Pearson was persuaded to come back to the club, which turned out to be a great decision for the Foxes as in the 2013/14 season, Leicester won the Championship and were promoted back to the Premier League.
Pearson’s most recent managerial role came at Watford in the 2019/20 season, that saw the club have four different managers with the former Leicester manager being the third. When he took charge, the club were bottom of the Premier League table and looked certain to go down. Under his management, Watford went on an impressive run which saw them beat the likes of Liverpool, who at the time were unbeaten in the league and were runaway league leaders. However, with two games to go and with the Hornets being three points clear of the relegation zone, Pearson was relieved of his role and Watford ended up getting relegated following two defeats in their final two matches.
A move to Sunderland for Pearson could be viewed as a step down in his career considering his recent successes as a Premier League manager, so a move to the Stadium of Light for the former Leicester and Watford man would come as a shock.
As of now, Pearson to become the next manager of Sunderland is priced at odds of 20/1.<br/>
