Next Sunderland Manager Odds

Phil Parkinson was relieved of his job role recently after the club went on a winless run of five games which has seen them exit two domestic cups and drop to eighth in League One. Currently, Sunderland are nine points off the top of the table after finishing in eighth position last season, which disappointed the hierarchy at the Stadium of Light.

Former Bolton Wanderers manager Parkinson was appointed in October 2019 and following his recent sacking after just over 13 months at the helm, it now means that there have been ten permanent managers since Steve Bruce left back in 2011, of which none have made it past two years in charge of the club.

Danny Cowley Odds

Danny Cowley is currently the bookmakers favourite to become the next manager at the Stadium of Light, with the North East club looking to get back on track in their bid to get promoted back to the Championship.

Cowley’s best spell as a manager came at former club Lincoln City between 2016 and 2019 where he even oversaw the club in two incredible cup runs. The ex-Huddersfield Town manager also became the first manager to manage a non-league club to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup after defeating Championship sides such as Ipswich Town, Brighton & Hove Albion and Premier League club Burnley at Turf Moor. On top of this, he led Lincoln to an EFL Trophy as well as promotion from the National League to League One in three seasons.

Even though Cowley was relieved of his role at Huddersfield this year, he still saw some success at the club where he won EFL Championship Manager of the Month in October 2019. Now without a managerial position, Sunderland could become a tempting offer which would improve his reputation if he could oversee promotion back to the Championship.

As of now, odds for Danny Cowley to become the next permanent manager of Sunderland is priced at 1/3 - click the link to add this bet into your bet slip!

Gustavo Poyet Odds

The highest-profile manager who has been realistically linked to taking up the role at Sunderland is former Black Cats boss Gustavo Poyet.

The Uruguayan coach left the club in March 2015 after a run which saw Sunderland win just one game in 12 matches in the Premier League that season, leaving the Black Cats just one point above the relegation zone. In his time at the club, Poyet helped Sunderland avoid relegation in 2013/14 after taking over from Paulo Di Canio in October 2013.

The former Tottenham and Chelsea midfielder helped Sunderland to a 14th placed finish as well as getting them to the Capital One Cup final, which saw them finish as runners-up to Manchester City in 2014. Since his departure from the Black Cats, Poyet has gone on to manager AEK Athens, Real Betis, Shanghai Shenhua and Bordeaux without amounting more than a years’ worth of time at any of those clubs.

In a podcast interview prior to Parkinson’s departure, Poyet said he would welcome the opportunity to manage the Black Cats once again. Now without a manager, Sunderland could go after the manager who used to manage them in the Premier League, to try and work their way back to where they believe they belong.

As of now, odds for Gustavo Poyet to become the next Sunderland manager are priced at 5/1- click on this link to claim this bet in your bet slip!

Lee Johnson Odds

The former Bristol City manager, Lee Johnson, has also been linked with the vacant managerial role at the Stadium of Light.

In his time at Bristol, Johnson helped the club avoid relegation back to League One in 2015/16 having been appointed at Ashton gate in February that season, with the Robins finishing in 18th, having won eight games between his arrival and the end of the campaign.

In the following seasons, Johnson took the club to the heights of eighth place, before finishing last season’s campaign in 12th after the club suffered nine defeats in 16 games, having previously been just inside the play-offs, resulting in Johnson being sacked.

The now unemployed manager could take up the challenge of managing Sunderland, especially as he could do very well at the club. However, Johnson has expressed his desire to get back to managing a Championship side or to go manage abroad in countries such as Portugal. Going to Sunderland, therefore, would be viewed as a step down in his career.

As a result, Lee Johnson odds to become the next manager of Sunderland is priced at 4/1.

Paul Cook Odds

Another manager who has seen large amounts of success in recent years is former Wigan Athletic manager, Paul Cook.

In his time as a manager, Cook has helped lead Chesterfield to a League Two promotion and the following year lead them to a sixth-placed finish. However, the club he had the most success with was Wigan. In his time at the Latics, he led the club back to the Championship in his first season as well as a memorable FA Cup run in which they reached the quarter-finals after beating Bournemouth, West Ham United and Manchester City. Following the club being relegated to League One due to financial difficulties, Cook left his role at the Latics.

Cook is still yet to take up any managerial roles despite having been linked to many clubs such as Tranmere Rovers. With Sunderland being a League One side that have struggled, he could be the one to bring success back to the club and elevate his reputation. Although, like it is for any manager, this certainly isn’t a risk-free move.

Currently, Paul Cook to be appointed as the next manager of Sunderland is priced at odds of 10/1 - click on this link to claim this bet in your bet slip!

Owen Coyle Odds

Although Owen Coyle has recently been appointed as manager of Indian Super League side Jamshedpur FC, you can imagine that he would relish a return to management in English football, with his last job in the Football League coming at Blackburn Rovers in 2017.

Despite previously managing Blackburn, his biggest managerial achievement is arguably at their arch-rivals Burnley in 2008/09, where against all odds Coyle earned promotion to the Premier League with the Clarets, who were one of the favourites to be relegated from the Championship that season. In the same campaign, Burnley reached the League Cup semi-finals having been narrowly beaten by Tottenham after extra time in the second leg.

Following Burnley’s promotion to the Premier League, Coyle left the Turf Moor based side mid-season to go to rivals Bolton, where he had previously played in the mid-1990s. Coyle guided Bolton to two 14th placed finishes and to a FA Cup semi-final in 2011, before being relegated in the 2011/12 season on the final day at Stoke; this and a poor run of form in the Championship saw the former Republic of Ireland international sacked in the following October.

Since 2012, Coyle has had unsuccessful spells at Wigan Athletic, Houston Dynamo, Blackburn and Ross County and is priced at 22/1 to get the Sunderland job.

Nigel Pearson Odds

Another manager who is in contention for the hot seat at Sunderland is former Watford boss Nigel Pearson.

The biggest success stories for Pearson have come at Leicester City over two managerial spells at the King Power Stadium. Ironically his first achievement with Leicester, was his promotion from League One, having beaten Leicester to staying up the previous season in the Championship whilst caretaker manager of Southampton. Despite Leicester’s promotion, following a takeover at the club, Pearson became out of favour with the board and left in 2010.

Just over a year later after leaving the club, Leicester had been taken over by a new owner in the popular Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha. Pearson was persuaded to come back to the club, which turned out to be a great decision for the Foxes as in the 2013/14 season, Leicester won the Championship and were promoted back to the Premier League.

Pearson’s most recent managerial role came at Watford in the 2019/20 season, that saw the club have four different managers with the former Leicester manager being the third. When he took charge, the club were bottom of the Premier League table and looked certain to go down. Under his management, Watford went on an impressive run which saw them beat the likes of Liverpool, who at the time were unbeaten in the league and were runaway league leaders. However, with two games to go and with the Hornets being three points clear of the relegation zone, Pearson was relieved of his role and Watford ended up getting relegated following two defeats in their final two matches.

A move to Sunderland for Pearson could be viewed as a step down in his career considering his recent successes as a Premier League manager, so a move to the Stadium of Light for the former Leicester and Watford man would come as a shock.

As of now, Pearson to become the next manager of Sunderland is priced at odds of 20/1.<br/>
