PSG's desperation for Champions League stardom

Paris Saint-Germain have come to be considered as one of Europe’s most elite clubs because of their takeover by the Qatari Sports Investment group in 2011. This windfall has allowed for the Ligue 1 side to spend hundreds of millions and capture the likes of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, the two most expensive transfer fees in football history, costing a staggering combined fee of £367 million.

Since the takeover, PSG have only failed to win the French league title twice, winning a total of eight and breaking the points record in 2015-16 with 96 points overall. In addition to the league titles, PSG have accumulated an amazing 17 other domestic trophies since 2011, highlighting just how dominant they have become in French football in recent years.

However, the one trophy that has eluded the Ligue 1 giants and is so desperately sought after by fans and owners, is the UEFA Champions League. Despite a host of elite-level managers employed at the club and along with players such as Zlatan Ibrahimović and Neymar, PSG have yet to find success in Europe’s most elite competition.

Carlo Ancelotti, Lauren Blanc and Unai Emery have all tried their hand at attaining European success, but all failed and inevitably lost their managerial jobs in the French capital as a result.

Today's manager, Thomas Tuchel, has currently followed in his predecessor’s footsteps, failing to pass the round of 16. Could this perhaps prompt his employers to seek out a replacement for the German?

Here we take a look at the Paddy Power markets for PSG's next manager odds.

Allegri PSG Odds

Massimiliano Allegri has been tipped as the favourite to become the next manager of PSG, with very short odds of 6/4. The Italian has been without a club since leaving Juventus last summer, which no doubt leaves many gargantuan clubs looking to consider him at the helm, as he is no stranger to success.

Allegri has earned himself a decent Champions League record since managing Juventus, leading the club to two Champions League finals in 2014/15 and 2016/17, although losing out to the Spanish giants on both occassions - Barcelona in 2015 and Real Madrid side in 2017.

PSG's Qatari owners could look to Allegri as a replacement for Tuchel, based on his Champions League record alone, as surely a manager who has been so close to European success would utilise the likes of PSG superstars Neymar, Mbappe and Edison Cavani to win the most desired trophy in Europe.

The former Juventus man admitted to ESPN that he would not join a new club until the summer, which could prompt certain teams in the market for a new manager to consider the Italian. If PSG were to look at replacing Allegri, the club would need to fend off other European giants potentially looking to employ him this summer.

The likes of Manchester United may soon look past Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, whilst clubs like Chelsea are no stranger to hiring a winning Italian at the helm and could choose Allegri over Lampard sooner rather than later.

Now, however, if Tuchel fails to show improvement in the Champions League, the Parisians could look at replacing him with Allegri. With the odds at 6/4, this is worth a position on any punters bet slip.

Deschamps PSG Odds

Paddy Power have rated the odds at 11/2 for the for Marseille, Monaco and Juventus manager, Didier Deschamps, to become the next PSG boss.

The Frenchman is adored by his compatriots, having become the only man in history to win the World Cup as a captain and as a manager - both happened within two decades of each other.

Before this, Deschamps gained his reputation as a manager on the domestic front by winning the French double in the 2009/10 season, whilst also miraculously reaching the Champions League final with Monaco in 2004 - something the PSG hierarchy will surely look into when seeking his signature.

Before winning the Coupe de la Ligue with Monaco, the France legend went onto win two more French League Cups as well as two French Super Cups, thus earning him the job of a lifetime as France national team boss.

After reaching the Euro 2016 final and winning the World Cup, Deschamps is eight years into his appointment with the national team, and most likely won't leave anytime soon because of their current success. On the other hand, there is the argument he would be the perfect fit for PSG being able to potentially lure the likes of Paul Pogba to take them to the next level.

However, the French Football Federation have already agreed with Deschamps that he will manage the national team until the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after his recent success in Russia during the 2018 World Cup. Also, with Euro 2021 just a year away and the World Cup the following year, it is highly unlikely he will leave his post any time soon.

Pochettino PSG Odds

Mauricio Pochettino is the outsider to become the next PSG manager as Paddy Power have given the odds of 10/1.

Pochettino was controversially sacked by Tottenham Hotspur at the start of the season, after five years in charge of the north London club. Spurs began the season in poor form under the 44-year-old, which prompted his employers to end his time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and eventually replace him with former Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho.

The Argentine was previously highly praised for the work he had done with the club, taking them to a Champions League final just six months before he was relieved of his post as head coach. And, although Spurs are a team held in high regard, PSG are undoubtedly a better team on paper and many would argue that Pochettino could be the man to utilise such superstar players side to get them closer to a Champions League title.

At the same time, it will surely give Pochttetino a great chance to win some silverware, something he failed to do with Spurs.

However, this move is unlikely to happen on the account of him being heavily linked with a return to the Premier League, in particular, the role at the helm of United. For this, Pochettino is considered to only have an outsiders chance of becoming the next manager in control at the Parc des Princes.
