Newcastle United now odds-on to sign Aaron Mooy

Newcastle United now odds-on to sign Aaron Mooy

Is Aaron Mooy set for Newcastle United transfer?

Shortly after Huddersfield Town’s relegation from the Premier League, talk of Aaron Mooy leaving the club began.

The Australian is undoubtedly the Terriers’ stand out player and the one who most clubs outside the bottom half of the Premier League would be happy to have in their team. He was crucial in Town’s initial promotion to the Premier League whilst also playing a key role in keeping them up in their first season in the top flight. His strong performances continued last season, despite the team really struggling.

Early on in the summer both Newcastle United and West Ham were linked with a move for the 28-year-old, but if one bookmakers odds are to be believed one of those two clubs are now considered more likely to sign him.

Indeed Paddy Power have slashed the odds on the former Melbourne City man joining Newcastle in the current transfer window, with the price dropping from 15/2 to odds-on at 4/6.

Of course a lot could depend on the potential takeover at St James’ Park this summer, with Mike Ashley possibly selling up to UAE billionaire Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nahyan. If that deal goes ahead they are likely to be a little more ambitious with their signings, although perhaps not to the extent of signing Kylian Mbappe despite some bookmakers offering odds on the Frenchman moving to Tyneside.

But if a change of ownership does not come to fruition, then signing a player such as Mooy looks a realistic one for the Toon and one that would certainly improve their options in the middle of the park.

Rafa Benitez Newcastle United

Could Rafa Benitez sign Aaron Mooy from Huddersfield Town this summer?

Watford also an option for Mooy?

Although Paddy’s seem convinced that he will join the Magpies it is not the case for every bookmaker.

Sky Bet have Rafa Benitez’s side priced way out at 8/1 to sign the Aussie, significantly longer odds than the 4/6 on offer with Paddy Power. Instead, Sky are predicting that he will move to Watford and they have the Hornets as 1/1 favourites to secure his signature.

Local newspaper the Huddersfield Examiner have confirmed that Watford are indeed interested in the player, who reportedly be available for around £15 million this summer.

Javi Gracia’s side are quite well stocking in central midfield, with the likes of Abdoulaye Doucoure, Etienne Capoue, Nathaniel Chalobah and Will Hughes already at the club. But they could well lose Doucoure this summer with clubs such as PSG and Manchester United reportedly interested in the Frenchman.

If he were to leave, then Watford would be looking for a replacement and they may see Mooy as the man to fill the void. That said, Doucoure is a much more powerful and athletic midfielder whilst the Australian is more of a number 10, with great control and delivery as well as an eye for goal.
