AC Milan pushing for a Champions League finish in Serie A

AC Milan finally look capable of resulting in the top four

After another turbulent season, AC Milan could finally be getting back to their old ways, sitting at fourth in the Serie A table. They’ve had plenty of issues over the last few seasons, even with the injection of more finances for player transfers, but they’ve found some solid form since January, helped by the acquisition of a prolific striker.

The odds on a Serie A top 4 finish started in AC Milan’s favour at 8/11, but constant disappointment in the league had them spending most of the campaign above EVENS. Current form has them looking far stronger, even moving into 1/2 after their 3-0 win over Empoli on Friday night. They’re now sat at 8/15 on Bet365, with lots of bookies seeing them as being fated to finish in the top four.

Serie A Top Four Finish Odds see AC Milan at their shortest price

It’s been a sign of AC Milan’s improvement under Gennaro Gattuso that they’ve reached their shortest price to finish in the top four of the Serie A this season. He was expected to be relieved of his duties at several stages in the first half of the season – not helped by the apparent spat between him and on-loan Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain – but things have finally clicked into place since the end of 2018.

In cancelling Gonzalo Higuain’s loan deal, the Argentine striker was able to play out a second loan at Chelsea. Milan signed Krzysztof Piatek as his replacement, with hopes that the exciting prospect could continue the form that saw him score nineteen goals in twenty-one games over all competitions for Genoa so far this season. Brought in for a reported £30 million, Piatek has been exactly what Gattuso has needed in his side, scoring seven goals in his first six games.

There aren’t many moments where signing one player has such an impact on a team, but The Rossoneri are a different entity with Krzysztof Piatek up front. He wasn’t able to score in his first game, but he achieved a brace in their Coppa Italia meeting with Napoli, going on to score in all four fixtures played since, including a second brace against Atalanta. Their place in the top four could be partially dependant on Piatek’s form, but if he carries on in a similar state, they could start next season in sensational style.

Gennaro Gattuso AC Milan

Gennaro Gattuso has really turn things around at AC Milan, cancelling out any thoughts of his number being up any time soon.

A Derby della Madonnina with far more at stake

Local derby rivals Roma and Lazio are sat at fifth and sixth, but there’s another rivalry competing for supremacy even further up the table, Inter Milan in third and AC Milan in fourth. Internazionale are only two points ahead of their derby side, and with AC Milan only a point ahead of Roma, they need to keep picking up three points at every possible opportunity.

The main priority for AC Milan will be to defeat Lazio in the next round of the Coppa Italia on Wednesday night, leaving further chances to pick up points at home to Sassuolo and away to Chievo Verona back in Serie A. After these fixtures, the Derby della Madonnina is staged with AC Milan as the home side, where the outcome is likely to say a lot about how the season will end as well as identifying who is currently the best football team in Milan.

Current Serie A Top 4 Odds put Inter Milan at 1/3 to remain where they are, but that could all change if AC Milan continue to defeat most teams they play and if Roma also stay on track with showing what they can do under Eusebio Di Francesco. Inter have their own issues with Mauro Icardi reportedly refusing to play, so without his goals, they could be a very different side before the season meets its conclusion.

David Beckham Ronaldinho AC Milan

It’s hoped that AC Milan will soon be challenging at the highest level again, returning back to being one of Europe’s greatest football clubs.
