Tottenham could hijack Everton’s Andre Gomes transfer

Could Andre Gomes transfer to Tottenham Hotspur this summer?

Andre Gomes looks set to be a wanted man this summer. The Portuguese international has just enjoyed a superb season on loan at Everton in the Premier League which has helped him revitalise his career which had stalled following his move to Barcelona from Valencia in 2016.

But with his parent club still happy to sell him despite his strong performances, it looks like there may be a fight for his services between two clubs in England’s top flight. The Toffees would like to take the player back to Goodison Park, but it is thought that a move to Tottenham Hotspur could be on the cards instead.

Reports are suggesting that Mauricio Pochettino’s side are closing in on a £35 million agreement with Barcelona to sign the midfielder as they look to bolster their squad. And as a result, Spurs are now the odds-on favourites to sign the 25-year-old this summer, with Sky Bet offering odds of 10/11.

Tottenham have of course gone through the last two transfer windows without signing a single player, making reaching the Champions League final an amazing achievement. But they are expected to be more active in the market this summer and it looks like Gomes is set to be one of their targets alongside Ryan Sessegnon of Fulham.

After selling Mousa Dembele, and with the likes of Moussa Sissoko, Harry Winks and Eric Dier all suffering from injuries of late, central midfield has been an area where Spurs have been weak recently.

Pochettino will therefore be desperate to bring one or two in who can add more quality in the teams engine room as they look to close the gap between themselves and the top two in the Premier League next season. Gomes is certainly one midfield option for them, whilst Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish is also a target for Tottenham although his future is likely to depend on whether they win the Championship play-off final.

Everton still keen to secure Andre Gomes transfer

As mentioned it was at Everton where Gomes has flourished in the Premier League this season and the Merseyside club would certainly love to make his loan a permanent deal.

Marco Silva got the best out of his compatriot who became a key cog for them in the heart of their midfield. Indeed the 25-year-old made 27 Premier League appearances for the Toffees in the season just gone and became a firm fans favourite amongst the Goodison Park faithful.

Silva has since urged that they must “do everything to try to sign him,” as they look to build on an eighth placed finish this season, but it may be beyond them now with Spurs apparent interest.

Whilst Gomes enjoyed his time with Everton, a move to North London would be a step up for him and would enable him to play Champions League football next season. He could also potentially be joining the European champions, if Spurs go on to beat Liverpool on 1st June.

With that in mind, it is surely a no brainer for him to choose Tottenham over Everton. Bookmaker seem to agree, with Sky Bet now offering odds of 6/4 for him to move to Goodison Park this summer – the Toffees were initially the odds-on favourites to secure his signature.
