Antonio Valencia set for free transfer this summer

Antonio Valencia will leave Manchester United when his contract expires on 1st July 2019.

The Ecuadorian has been at Old Trafford for exactly 10 years, joining from Wigan Athletic in a deal worth in the region of £16 million back in 2009. But he is set to depart with the 20-time Premier League champions choosing not to extend his contract.

It would be fair to say that United have certainly got their moneys worth with Valencia. He made 339 appearances for the club in total and helping them win two Premier League titles, two League Cup’s, the FA Cup and Europa League.

He initially arrived at the club as a dynamic winger, but as he got older he gradually dropped back into a full-back role. The vast majority of Red Devils’ fan base loved Valencia, who always gave 100% and was involved in some memorable moments including setting up Wayne Rooney’s winner in the 2010 League Cup final.

In the last few years his playing time has been decreasing though. He made just six appearances in the Premier League last season and is behind both Ashley Young and Diogo Dalot in the pecking order, whilst another right-back in Aaron Wan-Bissaka is set to arrive leaving Valencia surplus to requirements.

So the question now is where will the Ecuador international go next. He has said that he has no intentions of retiring just yet, so we have taken a look at the betting odds to see who the favourites are to secure his signature.

Sheffield United odds-on to complete Antonio Valencia transfer

According to the bookmakers, the 33-year-old’s most likely destination this summer is Sheffield United. Sky Bet have made the Blades favourites to sign the right wing-back, offering odds of 4/7 for him to move to Bramall Lane.

Chris Wilder’s side are of course set to take part in their first Premier League campaign since 2006/07, and the former Northampton boss has openly admitted that they need to strengthen their squad before the season starts on August 10th.

They have already been linked with a whole host of names, from realistic targets such as Southampton’s Charlie Austin to the slightly more ridiculous rumour of former Bayern winger Franck Ribery.

Valencia seems a fairly realistic target, and would certainly add top flight experience to a squad in which very few players have played Premier League football before. He would also fit into Wilder’s 3-5-2 system as an attacking full-back, although the Blades do already have two players who play that position already in George Baldock and Kieron Freeman.

One stumbling block could be wages. Whilst at United the Ecuadorian would have been on a large sum of money per-week, much more than the Blades can probably afford to offer him. He may therefore have to lower his demands if he wants to join the newly promoted side.

Another option for Valencia may be leaving the Premier League and moving to the MLS. Although the player favours staying in England, he could be tempted stateside by another former Manchester United number seven.

David Beckham’s newly former side Inter Miami are set to play their first full season next year, and are currently on a recruitment drive to put a squad together. And it is thought that they are keen on signing the current Ecuador international who would be a major draw in the United States.

The odds on him moving to any MLS club are currently 4/1, which is the second shortest price available on the market.

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder is looking to strengthen his squad ahead of the 2019/20 Premier League season.
