Arsenal and Atletico Madrid both interested in Tagliafico transfer

Arsenal and Atletico Madrid both interested in Tagliafico transfer

Atletico Madrid keen to complete Tagliafico transfer this summer

It would be fair to say that Ajax have surpassed all expectations in the Champions League this season. The Dutch outfit are in the knockout phase of Europe’s elite competition for the first time in 13 years and have now reached the quarter-finals following a stunning 4-1 win against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

As a result of that victory, their odds to win the Champions League were slashed and several of their star players have already been linked with transfers away from the club this summer. The latest of those is left-back Nicolas Tagliafico and it looks like several clubs could enter the race to secure his signature.

But according to reports Atletico Madrid have identified the Argentina international as a key target ahead of the upcoming transfer window as they look to revamp their defence. Felipe Luis is the man currently occupying the left-back role for Atleti, but at 33-years-old they are now searching for his replacement.

According to Marca the clubs sporting director Andrea Berta is prepared to pay a significant fee to bring the player in after seeing him produce a string of impressive performances in the Champions League, including in their win over Real Madrid.

The player himself has spoken about the interest, but was keen to point out that his current focus remains with Ajax. He said: “If Diego Simeone is interested in me and really wants me then it means I’m doing well. The important thing for now, though, is to think about Ajax. We’re alive in three competitions and I need to focus on what’s happening with the team in Holland.”

Bookmaker BetVictor are offering odds on who Tagliafico will sign for in the summer, with Atletico currently priced at 6/1 to take the Argentinian to the Wanda Metropolitano.

Tagliafico transfer odds still place Arsenal as favourites

Despite Tagliafico emerging as a major target for Atletico Madrid, it is Arsenal who are still in pole position to sign the 26-year-old in the summer according to BetVictor. Indeed, they have the Gunners priced up at 4/1 to sign the left-back from Ajax this summer making them the favourites.

It is well known that Unai Emery will be looking to bolster his defence this summer, with the Gunners backline having been a major weakness for them for several seasons now. Indeed they have conceded as many goals in the Premier League as the likes of Everton and Crystal Palace this season and more than Newcastle United, who for a parts of the season were in the relegation zone.

Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac are Arsenal’s current left-backs, but neither have particularly impressed this season. Added to that, Monreal recently turned 33-years-old and with age now catching up with him they will need to replace him soon.

Arsenal’s north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur are also priced at 4/1 to sign Tagliafico too however, with Mauricio Pochettino likely to be active in the transfer market in the summer after going two successive windows without signing anyone.

Arsenal’s Unai Emery will be hoping to bolster his defence this summer, and Nicolas Tagliafico is one of his transfer targets.
