Barcelona as short as 2/5 to win the Champions League after victory over Liverpool

Decisive win over Liverpool puts Barcelona down to 2/5 to win the Champions League

In another dramatic night of Champions League football, Barcelona wiped out their opponents with a 3-0 win at the Camp Nou. Liverpool fought hard throughout the entire ninety minutes of play but couldn’t keep out Lionel Messi when it mattered most, losing 3-0 to an undeniably formidable Barcelona side.

We previously looked into the Champions League winner odds prior to the semi-finals getting underway. At this point, Ajax were the least likely to win at 4/1, narrowly beaten by Tottenham Hotspur at 7/2. Liverpool were second favourites at 9/4, with the clear favourites being Barcelona, who were handed odds only as short as 13/8 to win the competition this season.

As things stand, the defeat for Liverpool sees them drifting as far as 25/1 to win the tournament, with Spurs ahead at 10/1 despite their opening 1-0 defeat to Ajax, who are second favourites at 7/2. Barcelona started the season at 9/2, falling to 13/8 before the semi-finals, but now standing as short as 2/5 on William Hill after moving one giant leap closer to the final.

Lionel Messi scores twelfth Champions League goal this season and 600th for club

Starting the game equally challenging to take the lead, a break in play saw Luis Suarez score his first Champions League goal of the season, with it being all the harder to take for Liverpool fans after he previously played a key part in helping Liverpool attempt to win the Premier League title in 2014.

Plenty of missed chances for Liverpool ruined any opportunity to equalise, and an early injury to Naby Keita meant putting Jordan Henderson on and using up an early substitute. By the second half, time was running out for Liverpool, and a tapped-in shot from Lionel Messi from the post doubled their lead. Messi then went on to score his second of the game to complete a 3-0 win, helped by Mo Salah missing an easy shot on goal, which hit the post, ruining any chance of a response from the Reds.

It’s now difficult to see any other outcome in this year’s Champions League than Barcelona winning the tournament. The option to bet on Lionel Messi to be crowned Champions League Top Scorer has also fallen by the wayside after scoring an incredible twelve goals in the competition this season, and his form is unlikely to stop any time soon, with a goal at Anfield making life even more difficult for Liverpool, as they’d need at least five goals to win the game.
