The best Twitter reactions to John Terry’s retirement

Former Chelsea and England defender John Terry announced his retirement from professional football on Sunday evening, four months after leaving Aston Villa.

Terry enjoyed a glittering career which saw him rack up 717 appearances for his boyhood club Chelsea, as well as earn 78 caps for England between 2003-2012. He also enjoyed a brief loan spell with Nottingham Forest in the 1999/00 season, before ending his career after a year with Villa in the Championship last term.

There was no lack of success during his days at Stamford Bridge, with Terry at the forefront of the Roman Abramovich era which turned the London club into one of the powerhouses of English football.

As a Chelsea player, he won five Premier League titles, five FA Cups, three League Cups, the Champions League and the Europa League, putting him amongst one of the most decorated players of his generation.

He also twice won the club’s Player of the Year award in 2000/01 and 2004/05, as well as being named the PFA Player’s Player of the Year in the same year as the latter, during his first season under Jose Mourinho.

It was undoubtedly under Mourinho that Terry played his best football, as he, Petr Cech, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba made the basis of a formidable spine that breeded success for the best part of a decade.

The association between Chelsea and Terry makes it almost inevitable that their paths will cross once again one day, though it remains to be seen what his next move will be immediately after life after football.

As ever, Twitter had plenty to say on Terry’s retirement and we have picked out some of the best reactions below.
