Championship Golden Boot: Who is the bookmakers’ favourite?

Championship Golden Boot: Who is the bookmakers’ favourite?

The Championship Golden Boot race is hotting up

As we enter the final stretch of the Championship season, most of the attention is focussed on the promotion race. As many as seven clubs will still feel they have a chance of automatic promotion and there looks set to be plenty of twists and turns between now and May. However, the race for the Championship Golden Boot is also hotting up with several players in contention to finish the campaign as the divisions leading goalscorer.

Three players have already bagged 20 times this season and two have already surpassed the total amount of goals last season’s leading scorer Matej Vydra managed in less appearances which shows how clinical several forwards in the second tier have been this term.

Seven goals currently separate eight players in the race for the award and almost all of those could still claim the Golden Boot award. We have taken a look at those leading the way and some of the stats behind their success, whilst also assessing the odds to see who the bookmakers are predicting will finish the campaign as leading goalscorer.

Norwich striker Teemu Pukki leading the way

Norwich City’s Teemu Pukki is currently in pole position to win the Championship Golden Boot, having netted 23 times in 30 appearances so far. The Finnish forward has surprised everyone with the amount of goals he has scored this season, having struggled in his only previous spell in Britain with just nine goals in 37 appearances for Celtic.

But he appears to found a home at Carrow Road and is on fire right now with 18 goals in his last 18 league outings helping fire the Canaries to the top of the Championship table. It is no surprise how many goals the 28-year-old has scored when you look deeper into his stats, indeed he has taken the second most shots so far in the Championship (95) with only Neal Maupay (98) taking more.

The bookmakers seem to fancy his chances of remaining the divisions top scorer too, he is now the favourite with odds of 6/4 to win the Golden Boot with Sky Bet and with Norwich having the ‘easiest’ set of fixtures between now and the end of the season, there is certainly reason to believe that he will continue to score goals.

Billy Sharp goals keep on coming

The player currently closest to Pukki in the top goalscorer standings is Sheffield United striker Billy Sharp. The 33-year-old has bagged 22 times so far this season meaning he is just one behind in the Championship Golden Boot race and the way he is playing this season he will certainly fancy his chances of finishing top of the pile.

Sharp is in the form of his life right now, and has scored 12 times in his last 12 Championship appearances as he looks to fire his boyhood Blades back into the Premier League for the first time since the 2006/07 season. Statistically it is Sharp who is the most clinical goalscorer in the division, with the Blades striker having netted from 70% of the 27 big chances created for him whilst he also has the best minutes-per-goal ratio too.

Quite simply, Sharp is a striker who scores goals. Indeed, earlier in the season he became the leading scorer in English football this century when he netted his 220th career league goal in the Blades 3-0 win away at Wigan. He has formed an outstanding partnership with David McGoldrick, but the Billy Sharp and Gary Madine combination has also showed early signs of promise following the latter’s January arrival from Cardiff City.

Bookmakers are pricing the Sheffield-born striker as the second favourite to win the Golden Boot, with the best odds available being 3/1 with BetVictor which could be value given how clinical he has been.

Aston Villa’s Tammy Abraham also in the running

Aston Villa’s play-off bid may be faltering, but the form of the centre-forward has remained consistent throughout the campaign. Tammy Abraham is spending the season on loan at Villa Park from Chelsea and has been lethal in front of goal. The 21-year-old has managed to hit 20 goals in 27 appearances for the Villains, making him the third highest goalscorer in the division behind Sharp and Pukki.

Abraham was linked with a move to Wolves in the January transfer window but elected to stay with Aston Villa, and in the Championship he is a proven goalscorer. During his time at Bristol City a couple of years ago he bagged 23 goals and he has certainly picked up from where he left off in the second tier this year. He has also benefitted from more big chances than any of his rivals (29), converting 52% of those.

He is considered the third favourite Golden Boot with the bookies, which is fair given he is a couple of goals behind his rivals at the moment. It is bet365 who have the best odds for Abraham to win it, they are priced at 9/2.

Other players chasing the Championship Golden Boot

Behind the three players who have already hit 20 goals, there are also four or five other players who will believe they still have a chance of winning the Championship Golden Boot. Che Adams has scored 19 times for Birmingham City this season and is the fourth highest marksman in the league, but some bookmakers are still doubting that he can finish the season on top with BetVictor offering odds of 14/1.

Neal Maupay is another player who has been in fine form this season. The Frenchman has netted 18 times for Brentford and as mentioned earlier has taken more shots than any player in the Championship this season. He started the campaign on fire with 10 goals in his first 10 appearances, but hasn’t quite been as prolific since then with nine in his last 18. That said he is still just five goals behind Pukki and is more than capable of adding more goals before the end of the season, he is priced at 13/1 with Betfair.

West Brom pair Jay Rodriguez and Dwight Gayle are both also in the mix, having bagged 17 and 16 times respectively. Gayle has played the fewest minutes of the contenders (1,757) which makes his tally even more impressive, whilst Rodriguez has scored from exactly half of his shots on target this season. The pair of them are priced at 10/1 respectively.
