The Championship has been as unpredictable and tight as ever this term, with there being just five points between leaders Leeds United and eighth-placed Blackburn Rovers.

Mid-table underachievers Aston Villa and Stoke City are just nine points off the top of the Championship table themselves and there is still plenty of time for teams at the bottom to put a run together to surge towards the top of the table.

Below, we take a look at the current top five contenders to win the Championship and their current odds of doing so.

Leeds United at 7/2 with Bet365 – BET HERE

No team has lead the Championship for longer than Leeds United so far this season, with the Yorkshire outfit currently looking to have their best chance of getting back into the Premier League for the first time since 2004. A sleeping giant in English football, Marcelo Bielsa has relit the fire at Elland Road, with the team now playing excellent, intense football. Whether or not they can sustain such an intense style of play remains to be seen, but they certainly appear to be one of the top sides in the division at this moment in time, losing just twice to this point.

Middlesbrough at 6/1 with Paddy Power – BET HERE

Next up are Tony Pulis’ Middlesbrough, who like Leeds have lost just two of their opening 16 matches in the Championship. They have by far the best defensive record in the division so far, conceding just eight goals to date – five fewer than any other side in the second tier. Boro currently sit fourth in the table and the main questions thrown towards them will be whether they have the goals from within to win promotion. They have just 17 goals to their name, which is the lowest of any team in the top 10.

Sheffield United at 6/1 with Betfred – BET HERE

Sheffield United have kicked on from last season’s showing by asserting themselves as serious promotion contenders in the early months of this campaign. Chris Wilder has done a fantastic job with a budget that isn’t comparable to some of the other sides in the race for promotion, finding themselves just a point below leaders Leeds. The Blades recently went on a run of eight wins in 10 matches to surge their way up the table, but have recently won just one of their last four games and will aim to get back on track in the Sheffield derby this weekend.

Derby County at 15/2 with SkyBet – BET HERE

Frank Lampard will be delighted with the start his team have made to the Championship campaign, having been in and around the Play-Offs for the majority of the season. The Rams have a squad full of talent, including loanees Mason Mount and Harry Wilson, both of whom have been excellent signings, while Jack Marriott appears to now be settling in at the club. They look set to be reliant on their home form this season, having won six of their eight games at Pride Park – drawing the other two – since being thumped by Leeds United in their first home outing of the campaign.

West Bromwich Albion at 15/2 with SkyBet – BET HERE

One thing West Brom fans can’t moan about is a lack of entertainment, having been free-scoring ever since being relegated from the Premier League at the back end of last season. The Baggies are the league’s highest-scoring side with 33 goals from 16 games, 21 of which have come from the superb trio of Jay Rodriguez, Dwight Gayle and Harvey Barnes. However, they have really struggled in recent weeks, taking just a point from their last four matches and have conceded goals almost as frequently as they’ve scored them. No team inside the top 15 have allowed more goals than West Brom, with it critical that Darren Moore finds a balance in the coming weeks.
