Charlie Austin transfer odds: Sheffield United favourites to sign striker

Odds suggest Charlie Austin could transfer to Sheffield United

Charlie Austin looks set to transfer away from Southampton this summer, with Ralph Hasenhüttl telling the striker that he is free to leave St Mary’s.

The 29-year-old struggled for minutes at the Saints last season, particularly after the Austrian replaced Mark Hughes in the dugout. He made just four Premier League starts following the arrival of Hasenhüttl, and having found the back of the net just twice all season he is now deemed surplus to requirements.

His struggles at Southampton have largely been down to a series of injury problems, but there is no doubting that he has proven himself as a Premier League quality striker in the past. He bagged 18 goals in a struggling QPR side a few years ago and with that in mind, there could be a couple of top flight clubs willing to take a punt on him this summer with the hope that he can put the injuries behind him.

One of those clubs could be Sheffield United, who are currently the bookmakers favourites to sign Austin. The Blades were as big as 20/1 to buy the player this summer just days ago, but following a cryptic tweet from their skipper Billy Sharp in response to a post from Austin’s wife Bianca on 23rd June (see below), those odds have now been slashed down to 1/1.

It is well known that Chris Wilder wishes to sign a couple of strikers ahead of the 2019/20 campaign, with David McGoldrick and Sharp the only recognised centre forwards currently in his squad. Austin would probably be within budget for them too, with Southampton likely to ask for no more than £4 million for the player making him a much more realistic target than Franck Ribery who was recently linked with the Blades.

Having worked wonders with McGoldrick last season, another player who had a reputation for being injury-prone prior to his move to Bramall Lane, Wilder may well feel that he can get the best out of Austin and could decide to make him a transfer target.

Aston Villa also interested in Austin transfer

As well as Sheffield United, another promoted side could also be interested in acquiring Austin’s services if the odds are to be believed. Indeed Aston Villa are currently close second favourites to sign the former QPR striker, with Sky Bet pricing them up at 13/8.

Dean Smith’s side have been linked with a move for well over a month, with the Villans looking for more firepower as they make their return to the top flight. They have of course lost Tammy Abraham who’s loan expired following their play-off final win against Derby County, whilst Scott Hogan is also expected to leave Villa Park this summer.

That leaves them lacking a little in the striking department, and although they have signed Wesley Moraes from Club Brugge for £22 million, it is thought that they would still like to bring another centre forward in. Whether Austin is that man or not remains to be seen, but he could definitely represent value for money.

Sheffield Wednesday have also been linked with the former Swindon man this summer, and were 8/1 second favourites to sign him just a week ago. But they have now drifted out to 16/1, with it looking likely that Austin will try to remain in the Premier League rather than dropping into the Championship.
