Danny Ings Backed in to Make England’s EUR0 2020 Squad

Danny Ings Backed in to Make England’s EUR0 2020 Squad

The EURO’s may be five months away, but we can already hear the chants of ‘It’s coming home.’

England have been made the outright favourites for the competition at 4/1, but this isn’t the betting market that we’ll be indulging into today. Instead, we’ve taken a look into Paddy Power’s prices for players to make Gareth Southgate’s squad this summer, with a particular focus on Southampton’s in-form forward, Danny Ings.

Ings on fire

Fourteen league goals for the season. Ten in his last eleven. Ings is absolutely flying right now.

The Englishman is currently joint second in the Premier League’s top scorer’s chart, sitting behind Jamie Vardy by three goals. Considering he scored just twice in Southampton’s opening seven, his incredible goalscoring record across the last couple of months has been drawing in the plaudits from fans up and down the country.

Such form has correlated with the Saints’ recent resurgence, with Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side winning six of their last nine league games, not suffering a loss since mid-December. Ings has been at the forefront of such success, establishing himself as the club’s main source of goals. Although he isn’t deployed as the team’s lone striker, he is the main man up top, having contributed to over 50% of the team’s league goals.

Going purely off form, it’s hard to deny Ings’ chances of making the final cut in Southgate’s squad this summer. His goalscoring record has been noted by punters, with many fancying his chances in making it to the EURO’s.

Odds slashed

Betting on who is going to make England’s squad this summer has been a popular market, with various players in both the Premier League and Championship being linked with making the final selection. Of course, it should all come down to form, hence why bettors have enjoyed trying their luck in judging those who deserve the place.

When Ings was added to this betting market, he started off with a big price of 16/1. This was at the end of December, after Southampton gained all three points at Stamford Bridge. After scoring against Crystal Palace and also grabbing the winner vs Tottenham, his odds quickly dropped. By New Years Day, his price had quickly shortened to 10/1.

These odds gradually declined in the lead up to Saints’ trip to Leicester City, before dramatically dropping after the game. Ings got his name on the score-sheet yet again, nicking all three points for his team with a finish in the final ten minutes. This took the Englishman’s tally to fourteen league goals for the season, with his odds in making Southgate’s squad then being cut again.

Ings’ price is now 10/3 with Paddy Power, which is the shortest they have been since the betting market opened. At present, this is the best price available with bookmakers.

Other forwards in contention

Although Ings’ form has heavily contributed to his drop in the betting market, Harry Kane’s injury has also had a part to play. The Spurs forward has torn his hamstring and is now not expected back until April. This is potentially the most optimistic thinking though, with Jose Mourinho revealing that he actually has no idea when his main man will be back on the field.

The likes of Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho all have incredibly short odds, with the trio all in incredible form for their respected clubs. Southgate enjoys playing with lively, quick attackers, with each of the mentioned forwards fitting this bill perfectly.

Like Ings, Tammy Abraham’s odds have also been cut, with the Chelsea striker currently having a price of 3/10. Would the mentioned five players be enough for the Three Lions in the summer, or does Ings have enough to break into the final squad? Should this form continue, expect his odds to take a small dip yet again.
