Europa League Winner Odds: Napoli climb ahead of Arsenal after embarrassing BATE defeat

Many Arsenal fans believe their best route back into the Champions League next season will be to win the Europa League, but the evidence of Thursday night suggests that in itself will be a huge task.

The Gunners were beaten 1-0 by Belarusian minnows BATE Borisov away from home, losing to a side that hasn’t played a competitive game since December in the process.

To turn things around in the second leg Arsenal will also need to do so without the services of striker Alexandre Lacazette, who will be suspended for the second leg following his red card in the second half.

It is a competition Unai Emery values highly, as was demonstrated by the strength of his starting lineup that was also aided by the fact they do not have a game this weekend. You wouldn’t have thought it looking at the performance of the players, many of whom have been rested throughout the competition to make way for the club’s youngsters to get game time.

They held their own better than the first team on Thursday night, who must produce a response in the second leg next week, where they would’ve been hoping to have already had the job done.

Movement of odds

As a result of their poor display on Thursday, Arsenal have moved from second-favourites to win the competition to third-favourites. Serie A side Napoli have now surpassed them after they won 3-1 away from home to Swiss side FC Zurich.

Arsenal meanwhile will be looking to add to their six wins in 10 home games at the Emirates in the Europa League since the start of last season, as the team look to make it into the hat for the draw for the last 16.

At the start of the night, Arsenal were priced at 5/1 with bookmakers to go on and win the Europa League, though that hasn’t increased dramatically since the defeat with Unibet offering the biggest price of 7/1.

However, it has seen them swap places with Napoli in the betting market, who have now come down from 6/1 to 5/1 to take the place as second-favourites behind Chelsea.

Maurizio Sarri’s team remain the odds-on side to win the tournament this season and did their chances no harm on Thursday with a 2-1 away win at Malmo in Sweden. They are still best-priced at 9/2 to win the Europa League, also being 4/1 with other bookmakers.

English fans would love to see a potential all-Premier League final between Chelsea and Arsenal come the end of the season in Baku, Azerbaijan, but it seems the Gunners are less likely to hold up their end of the bargain.
