Four Players Available On a Free – Summer 2020

The transfer rumours continue to come thick and fast. We are just over a week into January and already, it feels as though every player under the sun has been linked with some sort of move.

Whilst certain stories can be called into question, as not many clubs are open to selling members of their squad halfway through their season, there is always the opportunity to find a coup in the market. Such bargains can likely be found in players whose contracts are expiring in the summer. On the subject of this point, we’ve looked into four players who find themselves in such a position, plus their odds with SkyBet to leave this month.

Christian Eriksen

Christian Eriksen is often a prominent name that pops up when it comes to transfer windows. The Dane has been constantly been linked with a move away from Tottenham for the past few months now, with the midfielder still not committing his future to the club. Many fans had hoped that the arrival of Jose Mourinho would encourage Eriksen to stay, but there has been no new developments on his situation.

The Portuguese has publicly spoken about the matter, stating that the only person who can speak about the player’s future is the player himself. In typical Mourinho fashion, he has suggested that he is in the dark about the contract scenario, suggesting that it is simply up to Eriksen as to whether he wants to stay at the club. Recent reports have added more fuel to the fire, with Sky in Italy reporting that Inter Milan are very keen on the midfielder.

There has been a few news outlets linking the 27-year-old with a move to Manchester United, but it does appear that Inter are the frontrunners to snap him up. SkyBet’s odds reflect this, to which the Serie A leaders are evens to sign him this month. Antonio Conte is keen to bolster his squad this month, and the arrival of Eriksen could help the side push on for their first league title in ten years.

Eriksen is 1/1 to join Inter Milan this month.

Ryan Fraser

Another Premier League player who seems to be running down his contract is Bournemouth’s Ryan Fraser. The Scotsman was high in demand last summer, on the back of his 7 goal and 14 assist campaign. Liverpool were linked with the winger and it would be a fair assessment in stating that the 25-year-old was likely frustrated in not seeing a big move materialise.

Now, it appears that Fraser is gunning for a big move, hence the lack of progression behind him signing a new deal. A move does appear to be more likely in the summer though, with SkyBet having him down at 11/2 to join Chelsea this month. There has been a lack of rumours linking Fraser with a move, with the Blues being made the ‘favourites’ at quite a high price. The arrival of Takumi Minamino on Merseyside has seen Liverpool’s odds drift out to 8/1, whilst a move to Leicester or Manchester United is also looking unlikely.

Fraser’s form has dropped off this season, with Bournemouth currently sitting in 18th position. The Cherries desperately need to turn their recent run around this month, and selling one of their starting frontmen is not necessarily a step forward in doing so.

Fraser is 11/2 to join Chelsea this month.

Dries Mertens

118 goals in 296 games. Dries Mertens is a living Napoli legend. The Belgian is currently three goals off becoming the club’s all-time record goalscorer, an accolade he could well bow out from Naples with.

Mertens’ is one of the biggest star names that is currently available as a free agent this summer, with numerous teams being linked with a move for the pacy forward. Despite being 32, the Belgium would be an efficient addition for most sides across Europe, as he is still a clinical figure in-front of goal. In six Champions League games this season, he registered five goals.

According to reports, Mertens is likely to stay in Italy, with Juventus and Inter Milan rumoured to be in for him. Conte’s side have been given a price of 4/1 to sign the Belgian, with Arsenal being the outright favourites at 7/2. Despite their label as the favourites, the Gunners’ priorities surely lie elsewhere in the transfer market.

Mertens is 4/1 to join Inter Milan this month.

Olivier Giroud

Arguably the most in-demand player of the transfer window is Olivier Giroud. The Frenchman has been quite the outcast figure since Frank Lampard took charge in the summer, having started just five league games this season. Despite a limited amount of game time, a whole host of clubs are said to be in for Giroud this month, with Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, Inter Milan and Lyon all reportedly interested.

Palace and Inter are the current favourites at 3/1, with the former holding quite an intriguing price. Should the move be a loan deal until the end of the season, it would be rather ideal for Giroud to remain in London, making a transfer to the Eagles a rather straightforward one to complete. Inter have been a prominent club in this piece, as it’s clear that Conte is looking for as many reinforcements as possible, as they look set to go head to head with Juventus for the Serie A title.

Villa are next in line at 5/1, with Dean Smith desperate for a striker following Wesley Moraes’ serious injury that is keeping him out for the rest of the season. Newcastle are also in the market for a new forward to help improve their fortunes in-front of goal, with the Magpies having an underdog price of 6/1.

Lyon currently have odds of 8/1, but their price is certainly one to watch. Lampard is reportedly keen on the French side’s striker Moussa Dembele, with outlets reporting a failed bid for the 23-year-old just last week. Could the Blues throw Giroud in as a bargaining chip?
