England manager Gareth Southgate believes Harry Kane is the world’s best goalscorer after the forward’s winning goal in the 2-1 victory over Croatia in the Nations League.

The victory at Wembley will now see the Three Lions progress to next summer’s Nations League Finals, coming out on top of a group which also featured Spain. Croatia have been relegated to Group B.

Kane scored the winner late on and provided the assist for Jesse Lingard’s equaliser in the second half and Southgate was full of praise for his captain at the full-time whistle.

“He’s the best goal-scorer in the world. You’re always loathed to take a player off of his ability.

“He’s our main penalty-taker, leader and his hold-up play is critical. We have huge belief in him and he is so hungry to lead the team further.”

It was Kane’s first goal for England in the Nations League and was the first time he has scored for his country since netting in the dramatic win over Colombia at the World Cup and ends a seven-game drought in doing so.

The 25-year-old now has an impressive 20 goals in 35 caps for his country and spearheads what is an ever-improving side.

Southgate was also keen to stress the importance of building on this recent success, adding: “We have come out of a very tough group. You can look at the one with France and Germany, but if you look at form and world rankings, ours is the toughest, so this is a real step forward – we have not just sat back after the summer, we have progressed.

“The players are hungry and are starting to believe. People can see the style, people are starting to believe in what we are doing.

“We have a had a very good year, but we have to make sure that is just the start.”
