James Norwood defies the odds in being League 2 Top Scorer

Tranmere Rovers forward James Norwood started the season as a massive outsider in the running for League 2 Top Scorer

Reaching fifth in League Two has shown an incredible ability to adapt for Tranmere Rovers, who are enjoying their first term back in the fourth tier of English football.

Solidly in the League 2 Play-Offs by ten points, Tranmere Rovers are now just two points away from an even more appetising top three finish, where they’re best priced at 13/2 on Betfair to move ahead of fourth before the season concludes.

Overachieving efforts of Tranmere Rovers as a whole have been admirable to say the least, but it’s also been something that they’ve presented through individual players, star striker James Norwood fulfilling his potential in what has been an exceptional season.

League Two Top Goalscorer Odds originally set at 40/1 for James Norwood

As with most newly promoted sides, the primary aim is to assure stability and safety from relegation before making any ambitious moves up the table. That’s the most calculated way to assess a promotion, but we’ve seen this to be far from the case with Wolves in the Premier League, Luton Town in League One, and Tranmere Rovers in League Two, who have all been attempting a second successive promotion to the league above.

Due to the assumed low-aiming focus of Tranmere Rovers, prolific striker James Norwood was also seen in a similar light, priced at 40/1 to become 2018/19 Sky Bet League Two Top Scorer, leaving a whopping seventeen players possessing a shorter price than the former Exeter City and Forest Green Rovers forward.

Skip ahead to today and James Norwood has twenty-seven league goals under his belt, putting him seven goals ahead of Mansfield Town’s Tyler Walker and MK Dons’ Kieran Agard. His odds moved down to 10/1 in September and as short as 7/2 by November when he was on a tally of thirteen goals in seventeen games, making him the distinct favourite to lift the League Two Golden Boot as we now approach this season’s remaining fixtures.

Putting on such an incredible display in League Two is especially admirable with this being James Norwood’s first full season in the football league. His first season at Tranmere Rovers in 2015 finished off with nineteen league goals, then dropping down to just fourteen league goals in the next campaign, before scoring twenty in a single term for the first time in his career in the 2017/2018 season. Moving into the football league and scoring twenty-seven goals with weeks left to play before the season reaches its end shows a lot of personal development as well as sky-high ambition.

Both Tyler Walker and Kieran Agard stand with twenty goals to their name, but there’s been plenty of worthy goalscorers other than James Norwood in League Two this season. Bury’s Nicky Maynard has nineteen goals to his name, followed by MK Dons’ Chuks Aneke and Exeter City’s Jayden Stockley, who’ve both scored sixteen goals.
