Wigan Athletic striker James Vaughan is having a medical at Portsmouth ahead of a loan move until the end of the season.

Vaughan, 30, hasn’t had the best of seasons with Wigan so far, scoring just two goals in 17 appearances for the Latics this term and former Pompey boss Paul Cook is happy for him to join his former club.

Vaughan’s last full season in League One came back in the 2016/17 season with Bury, scoring an impressive 24 goals in 37 league appearances and is clearly at home playing in the third tier of English football.

That lead to a spell with Sunderland, where he lasted just six months before being transferred to Wigan, but his time at the DW Stadium will now be coming to an end after just 12 months.

Portsmouth are currently second in League One, trailing leaders Luton Town by five points after the Hatters beat them 3-2 on Tuesday night in a dramatic top-of-the table encounter.

There are still as many as five teams in with a realistic shout of winning automatic promotion this season and Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett has been keen to add a new striker to his squad since the start of the month.

Ipswich Town’s Ellis Harrison was also said to be on their shortlist of targets, but they now have Vaughan coming in to bolster their frontline for the vital run-in of 17 games as they look to get back into the Championship.

The former Everton striker has been training with his new teammates this morning ahead of completing the remaining formalities of a transfer to Fratton Park later on this afternoon. They have already signed Cardiff striker Omar Bogle on loan this month.

Pompey are in need of a lift after losing three straight games in League One – the same number of matches they lost in the first 26 games of the league season.
