Jermain Defoe priced at odds of 8/1 to score 15+ SPL goals for Rangers

The veteran front man is expected to take the league by storm

Jermain Defoe has made a lot of money by kicking a lot of football’s into a lot of different goals over the years.

In a career spanning over 20 years, the now 36-year-old – who has made over 50 appearances for England – has scored 162 goals in the Premier League since his debut for West Ham in 1999.

Defoe’s former clubs include Tottenham, Portsmouth, Sunderland and most recently Bournemouth, whom he signed for back in 2017 as a fresh-faced, erm, 34-year-old.

Defoe became somewhat of a cult hero in the North East throughout his two year spell with Sunderland. The former Spurs front man pretty much singlehandedly kept the Black Cats in the Premier League by scoring 15 goals throughout a hugely challenging campaign back in 2015/16, showing that age was merely a number and that he still had plenty to offer in top flight football.

His move back to the south coast with Bournemouth, the club where he had spent a season on loan at back in 2000/01, was always ambitious. With upcoming starlets Joshua King and Callum Wilson both ahead of him in the pecking order at the Vitality Stadium, Defoe saw chances in Eddie Howe’s first team extremely limited, making just 28 appearances throughout the past 18 months.

Defoe hasn’t featured much for Bournemouth since joining the club in 2017.

The man who once destroyed Wigan Athletic by scoring five second-half goals in a 9-1 thrashing over the Latics ten years ago is now edging ever closer to retirement. However, before he does hang up the boots, there’s one more league within Great Britain he wishes to conquer – the Scottish Premier League.

Linking up with former England team-mate Steven Gerrard at Rangers, Defoe is now expected to fire the Gers to their first title win since 2011.

Having played second-fiddle to fierce rivals Celtic since their reinstatement back into the SPL three seasons ago, Rangers look to be genuine title contenders this term. Players like Alfredo Morelos and fellow loan signing Steven Davis (Southampton) are both expected to assist Defoe in their forthcoming 12-match title charge.

A free-scoring striker for years in the world’s best league, Defoe should find the much less-demanding SPL a walk in the park. SkyBet have him priced as short as 5/4 to net 10+ league goals, while he is 8/1 to bag 15 or more. If you really think he’ll do the business north of the border, you can get odds of 66/1 for him to score 20+ league goals.

Rangers final league meeting with Celtic comes at the end of March, with Defoe priced at odds of 2/1 to score against Brendan Rodgers’ reigning champions. He’s 12/1 to bag a brace, or a huge 100/1 to score a hat-trick.

He wouldn’t, would he?
