Jordan Lukaku set for Newcastle United loan

Jordan Lukaku is set to move to Newcastle United on loan until the end of the season, according to reports from Italy.

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez has been desperate to land a left back in this transfer window with their first choice Paul Dummett having missed plenty of matches with a persistent hamstring problem. The other left back at the club is Achraf Lazaar who signed from Palermo in 2016, but he has only played four league games for the club and has been training with the Under-23’s since returning from a loan spell at Benevento in the summer.

Monaco defender Antonio Barreca was thought to be on their radar too, but according to Sky Sports Italy journalist Gianluca Di Marzio a deal for Lukaku is now complete and will fill the void in the Magpies squad.

The 24-year-old is currently contracted to Serie A outfit Lazio, and was a regular for them last season having made 44 appearances in all competitions. But has made just seven appearances in the league for them this term, only one of which was a start and appears to be surplus to requirements .

He is the younger brother of Manchester United striker Romelu, and has been in Italy since 2016. Prior to that he played for Anderlecht before moving to Oostende in 2013, where he made 79 league appearances. He has also represented Belgium seven times during his career.

It will mark the first signing of the January transfer window for Newcastle, with Benitez having so far failed to get any other deals over the line. He is working with his hands tied behind his back however, with owner Mike Ashley still looking to sell the club and therefore offering a very limited budget.

Lukaku is well known for possessing great pace and is better deployed as a left wing back, which could be how Benitez uses him with Newcastle having deployed a three at the back at times this season.

Toon fans will hope that he can help them as they bid to avoid relegation to the Championship for a third time in the last 10 years. They currently sit in 17th place just one position and two points above the relegation zone.
