Leeds back as favourites for the Championship title as Norwich slip up

There will have been a section of Leeds United supporters that will have been worried that their team were slowly blowing their chance of promotion less than two weeks ago, as they lost 3-1 to Norwich City at Elland Road.

A brace from Mario Vrancic either side of Teemu Pukki’s strike appeared to give Norwich the advantage to go on and win the title, but two results later the complexion has changed once again.

The Canaries showed no signs of the nerves getting to them in their following game, securing a comfortable 3-0 victory over East Anglian rivals Ipswich Town the next week thanks to a Pukki brace.

As for Leeds, they scraped a 1-1 draw away to Middlesbrough thanks to a goal from Kalvin Phillips in the 11th minute of stoppage time in the second half and that point could well prove vital at the end of the season.

On Wednesday night the complexion of the title race changed once again, as Norwich lost 3-1 away to Preston North End at Deepdale, with former manager Alex Neil getting one over his former side.

He’s helped give Leeds the advantage in the title race now, as Marcelo Bielsa’s team took back top spot in the Championship with a 2-1 win over Swansea City at Elland Road, surviving a late penalty from the away side.

Who will hold their nerve?

With just one point separating the two sides, expect there to be plenty more lead changes between now and the end of the season.

It would also be negligent not to include Sheffield United’s role in the title race, with the Blades being just three points behind Leeds and two off Norwich. Chris Wilder’s team picked up a huge 1-0 win over Middlesbrough at Bramall Lane on Wednesday to keep them right on the tails of the top two.

Given where the club were when Wilder first took the reigns in League One, it would be a phenomenal achievement if he was able to take them into the Premier League, particularly on such a low budget compared to their rivals.

Still, it’s the top two that remain the favourites to go up, with Leeds now ascending to 6/4 to win the Championship title, while Norwich have dropped as low as 9/4 with SkyBet following their defeat at Deepdale.

As for Sheffield United, they can be backed at 5/1 with BetVictor and face some huge fixtures in the coming weeks, facing West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday in two of their next three matches.

Norwich will be looking to bounce back this Saturday and return to the top of the table away to strugglers Bolton Wanderers, while Leeds have the weekend off before then returning to action against the Trotters the following weeks at Elland Road.
