LISTEN: Alan Shearer rants about lack of investment at Newcastle United

Despite his role as a pundit for the BBC, Alan Shearer is very much a Newcastle United supporter and, like most, has had enough of the regime under Mike Ashley.

With the January transfer window now open, most clubs will be looking to find deals to help strengthen their team as the second half of the season approaches – yet Newcastle fans won’t be holding their breath over their own teams prospects of signing any new players.

Rafael Benitez is working with one of the tightest budgets in the Premier League at present, with the bulk of the squad at his disposal still being the one that helped win promotion two seasons ago.

Whilst on BBC Radio 5 Live, Shearer had his say on the lack of investment in the Newcastle side, comparing the current crop of players to that who were there 20 years ago and the money they spent then to get them in.

It’s worth baring in mind how dramatically the transfer market has inflated since then, with players costing more and more by the year, yet Newcastle under Ashley are still paying the same transfer fees as in years gone by.

Listen below as Shearer has his say on the current state of affairs at Newcastle under Ashley’s ownership and the inevitable frustrations Benitez must be facing.
