Liverpool are continuing to monitor RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, who is looking more and more likely to depart the Bundesliga side come the end of the campaign.

Werner’s current contract expires in 2020, with Bayern Munich also said to be interested in the German international, who has scored 11 goals in just 17 appearances for Leipzig in the Bundesliga so far this term.

Now, German outlet Abendzeitung has claimed that Liverpool scouts were in attendance back in December to watch Werner and Leipzig in their clash against Borussia Monchengladbach, during which he scored a brace in their 2-0 win.

The 22-year-old could also reportedly be available for as little as £36m in the summer, should he refuse to sign a new contract and they would be keen to sell him to a foreign side over domestic rivals Bayern Munich.

Liverpool have previously dealt with Leipzig in the past, having sold midfielder Naby Keita to Anfield in the summer of 2017, with the player officially becoming a Liverpool player 12 months later.

Jurgen Klopp is an admirer of the forward and with the team switching to a 4-2-3-1 in recent months, his signing could create a tantalising prospect of a front four featuring Werner, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

Werner told Sky Germany about his current situation, saying: “I’ve had a nice two and a half years at Leipzig, so they are in the picture. There are other clubs in the picture,” he said.

“If you play in Germany and want to stay in Germany, there is only one club in question.”
