Sadio Mane is a doubt for Liverpool’s trip to Huddersfield Town this weekend after suffering a broken thumb whilst on international duty with Senegal.

The 26-year-old has been one of the Reds’ most important players so far this season, scoring four goals in eight appearances in the Premier League, but went seven games without a goal in between the two most recent international breaks.

However, it seems he will be unable to bring that wait for a club goal to an end on Saturday evening following the emergence of images which show the enigmatic forward with a bandage over his left hand.

The timeline of his injury is currently unknown, though it arguably comes at a manageable time with Liverpool facing Huddersfield, Red Star Belgrade and Cardiff in their first week back from the international break.

As such, both Daniel Sturridge and Xherdan Shaqiri could be in line for a starting role at the weekend, as Jurgen Klopp looks to make use of the deeper squad he now has compared to last season.

Liverpool have a growing injury list, with Mohamed Salah also struggling with a muscle injury after going away with Egypt. He too could miss out at the John Smith’s Stadium at the weekend.

Elsewhere, James Milner will look to shake off a hamstring problem to return back to full fitness, while Divock Origi (ankle) and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (cruciate ligament) are also missing. Adam Lallana could return after missing the last few weeks with a groin problem.

There is at least more positive news on Virgil van Dijk, who Ronald Koeman confirmed would be back involved this weekend. “The medical staff of the Dutch national team spoke to the medical staff of Liverpool and made the decision that he was playing only the Germany game and then after back to Liverpool,” he said.
