Luton’s odds now as short as 4/9 to win the League One title

It’s been an incredible season for Luton Town so far, with the team taking League One by storm in their first campaign since winning promotion from League Two.

The Hatters were tipped by many to be competitive at the very least after going up from League Two the season before, finishing second to Accrington Stanley with a total of 88 points, losing a league-best eight of 46 games across the campaign.

They started out the season at 16/1 to win the League One title, which quickly then drifted to 20/1 after the team took just one point from their opening three matches of the season.

It must be noted that they faced arguably the toughest early examination in the division, taking on fellow promotion contenders Portsmouth, Sunderland and Peterborough United in each of their first three matches.

Two up, Two down

Still, they were able to bounce back from the early setbacks, since losing just twice in their next 30 league matches away to Doncaster Rovers and Barnsley.

The team have even managed to withstand the turbulence of losing manager Nathan Jones to Stoke City halfway through the season, with Mick Harford steadying the ship in exemplary fashion and is yet to lose a match as manager.

At home the team are yet to lose a game all season, taking an incredible 42 points from a possible 48 from their 16 matches at Kenilworth Road so far in League One, making it one of the most formidable grounds to visit in the country.

Their title to lose?

At the weekend Luton faced Fleetwood Town away from home, winning 2-1 thanks to goals either side of half-time from George Moncur and Pelly Ruddock respectively, surviving a last-gasp effort from Paddy Madden to win the three points.

The victory means the team now approach the final 13 games of this season with a six-point advantage at the top of the League One table, whilst also sitting 11 points clear of third-placed Portsmouth.

As such, Luton look in prime position to win the title this season and have done so playing some of the best football League One has seen. On current form, the only team that will be able to beat Luton is themselves, should they become complacent and begin to drop points in games they should be winning.

This is, though, a team that has grown accustomed to winning games over the last two years in League Two and League One and will be confident that they should be able to stay focused between now and the finish line. Their recent form has now seen the team move as short as 4/9 to win the League One title, being best-priced at 5/11 with Unibet.

Title rivals

Behind Luton in the betting market is second-placed Barnsley, who are 5/2 with Bet365. The in-form Tykes trail the Hatters by six points but do have a game in hand on them which they will look to take full advantage of.

Sunderland have two games in hand on Luton but are still 12 points behind them in the table, being available at 20/1 with SkyBet to mount an incredible comeback and win the title.

Next are Kenny Jackett’s Portsmouth, who were the early pace setters in the title race but have slipped up in recent weeks, allowing Luton and Barnsley to snatch a place in the top two. Pompey have fallen from odds-on 6/5 to 25/1 with BetVictor.

It is very much a four-horse race between now and the end of the season and one which Luton look in prime position to win.
