Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez linked with Premier League clubs

A rumoured rift with Diego Simeone could trigger a move away from Madrid for Saul Niguez

After the closure of the most recent January transfer window, most bookmakers were offering odds of 5/1 for Manchester City to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez, making them favourite ahead of other English clubs that were given a price.

As if fans of Atleti weren’t concerned enough by the thought of one of their greatest prospects moving on in the summer, newspapers throughout Europe have provided another reason to believe the claims, with close friends of Saul Niguez speaking of a heated disagreement between Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone and the player, stating that: “He cannot stay at Atletico anymore” and that “Everything’s complicated for him there.”

Various reports broke the news on the rift this week and the bookmakers followed suit, Betfair dropping their price on a proposed move to Manchester City for Saul Niguez from 5/1 to EVENS, indicating that the Etihad would be the most likely destination if he is to leave Madrid this summer.

Gundogan on the way out? Better call Saul

One of the main questions relating to a potential move for Saul Niguez would be wondering where he would fit into Pep Guardiola’s system at Manchester City. The midfielder is gifted with enough ability to convincingly pull off playing as a left winger, right winger, central defensive midfielder, and even a left-back, but as his natural position is in central midfield, it’s assumed that he will work as a replacement to Ilkay Gundogan, who’s always been on the fringe of Guardiola’s starting eleven.

Avid followers of Spanish football have been confused by a lot of newspapers lining up Saul Niguez as the eventual replacement to Fernandinho, but with the Spaniard playing to his fullest potential as a box-to-box player with plenty to offer in attack, it’s almost impossible to envisage that the key Atleti player will be moving into a more defensive role in preparation for Fernandinho’s latter years for The Citizens.

Another route to take would be for Pep Guardiola to acquire the services of Saul Niguez in order to prepare for the eventual decline of David Silva, especially as he’s now thirty-three and is in need of a long-term replacement, even with Bernardo Silva currently looking like the best option.

Saul has become a crucial utility player, which has even been useful in a squad as full of depth as Atletico Madrid’s, so he could be a perfect fit for Manchester City, providing additional cover to the left-back position, where Pep Guardiola has had a conundrum on his hands with Benjamin Mendy being so frequently riddled with injury problems. That could be another acceptable reason to sign the Spaniard if Guardiola opts against signing a left-back this summer.

Ilkay Gundogan Manchester City

Sources close to the club claim that Ilkay Gundogan is unhappy with spending so much of his time on the bench.

Far more factors link Saul with Manchester City but bookmakers are allowing other options, with both Liverpool and Manchester United being worthy candidates, given 20/1 odds for the midfielder to join either of City’s league or derby rivals.

No European clubs are handed a price for Saul Niguez’s next club, but Spurs are handed a 33/1 price, predicting a massive signing as Tottenham Hotspur turn a page at their new stadium.

It would be assumed that Saul Niguez will be choosing to play his football at either Manchester City or Manchester United if he moves to the Premier League in the summer, as Liverpool spent nearly £100 million on Naby Keita and Fabinho to strengthen their midfield prior to the current campaign. As for Spurs, they aren’t widely known for spending big on Europe’s elite.

Despite being left-footed, Saul Niguez is capable of scoring with either foot:
