Manchester United reaffirmed their status as favourites to finish in the top four on Monday night, as they defeated Chelsea 2-0 in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

It ultimately highlighted Chelsea’s deficiencies as much as it did United’s strengths, with the pressure being further ramped up on Maurizio Sarri after they were well-beaten and struggled to lay a finger on their opponents.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team have won 11 of their 13 games under his tutelage, with Paris Saint-Germain being the only side to defeat them since Jose Mourinho was sacked in the aftermath of their 3-1 loss to Liverpool.

However, they are now sat in the top four, one point ahead of both Arsenal and Chelsea in fifth and sixth respectively and look to have far less weaknesses in their side than their two London rivals.

Full circle

Liverpool are their opponents this Sunday, with the fixture being a bookmark to show how far they have come in the two months since their previous meeting at Anfield.

After that defeat, United were as far out as 14/1 to finish in the top four this season with Bet365, but have since come in significantly to evens and are favourites to finish fourth ahead of Arsenal and Chelsea.

The top three places have virtually already been decided, with Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham all vying for position in the top three, leaving the remaining three sides all to battle for one position.

Chelsea are second-favourites behind United to finish in the top four this season despite the huge unrest under Sarri, being priced at 5/4 with the majority of bookmakers to sneak in ahead of United.

As for Arsenal, they are priced at 3/1 to make their return to Champions League football via their league finish this season, but have struggled, like Chelsea, to find consistency in recent weeks.

Both teams are guilty of not only allowing United to get back into the race, but letting them be the outright favourites to win finish in the top four this term. Both Arsenal and Chelsea will also have the distraction of Europa League football between now and the end of the season, something which could also give United a huge advantage.

Solskjaer saw his team lose 2-0 to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie in the Champions League, leaving them on the brink of elimination in the competition. Chelsea won away to Malmo and although Arsenal fell to a defeat against BATE, both teams are expected to progress to the last 16 of the Europa League tonight, something which could prove to be of detriment to their top four hopes.

If United keep their current form up, Chelsea and Arsenal could both be relying on winning the Europa League to get themselves into next season’s Champions League. Solskjaer meanwhile would certainly be content with finishing in the top four and the FA Cup which is still up for grabs.
