Barcelona and Brazil legend Ronaldinho reportedly has just £5 in his bank, according to a report from Spanish outlet Marca.

That is despite the fact that he was once one of the world’s most well-paid footballers and had a multitude of sponsorship deals, including with Nike, Pepsi, Coca-Cola, EA Sports, Gatorade and Danone. Just 10 years ago, he signed a three-year, £5.1m-a-year deal to join Italian giants AC Milan.

The 38-year-old also earned $19 million from endorsements in 2006, yet his failure to pay off an accumulating debt has seen him left with just £5 to his name.

Marca’s report details that Ronaldinho has been unable to pay off debts which total £1.75m, that have been growing ever since 2015. As a result, he has seen his passport seized by Brazilian authorities, which puts his recent Nike campaign on hold.

Africa, Peru and Russia are just some of the destinations he has visited in recent months for his ‘Play Free’ Nike movement, with that sponsorship deal having a particular influence on the judge in the case.

It’s now 13 years since his iconic Nike advert, which became the first video to reach 100 million views on YouTube as he struck the crossbar four consecutive times without the ball touching the floor.

Ronaldinho was due to take part in a three-day tour of Kenya starting Friday, although that has now been put into doubt.
