Matthijs de Ligt set for Barcelona transfer this summer?

Odds suggest Matthijs de Ligt will transfer to Barcelona

One of the stories of the season has been Ajax’s remarkable run to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League, with several of their players making a name for themselves along the way. One player in particular has impressed with his performances, centre-back Matthijs de Ligt.

The 19-year-old, who is the the only defender to have ever won the Golden Boy award, has been key to the Dutch clubs success in Europe this season. His performances at the heart of their defence have been beyond his years, captaining the side and showing composure and leadership whilst also chipping in with a couple of vital goals as they have knocked out the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus.

De Ligt has already established himself as a regular in the Netherlands national team too, making 18 appearances already despite being so young. He also plays alongside arguably the best centre-half in the world and potential Ballon d’Or contender Virgil van Dijk, which will only aid him in his development.

The Dutchman will be one of their key men as they take on Spurs in the Champions League, with a first final since the 1995/96 season within touching distance.

Predictably, due to his exceptional performances it has led to plenty of speculation about his future. The giants of European football are all said to be interested in the young defender, but according to the odds one club in particular are in pole position to secure his signature.

Barcelona are the team in question, with the La Liga side currently 1/7 to sign de Ligt from Ajax in the next transfer window with Sky Bet.

Matthijs de Ligt Ajax

Matthijs de Ligt has played a huge part in Ajax’s impressive Champions League run in the 2018/19 season.

Ronald de Boer thinks de Ligt could play in Premier League

Former Ajax player and current youth team coach Ronald de Boer has had his say one where he thinks de Ligt should go, which is basically any big club in Europe.

The 48-year-old believes that the defender is ready to play for any team due to his quality, including the best Premier League outfits. He did advise that he choose a team that plays attacking football though, in order to get the best out of him.

Speaking to talkSPORT, de Boer said: “For De Ligt, it’s up to him what he wants to do. He has to look for a team that plays attacking football and has time on the ball. For me [he can go to] Barcelona, Manchester City, Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain, these teams I would advise him to go there.

“But I mean all the other teams, even Tottenham, they’re great teams to play for.”

He also went on to say that he feels that he is currently playing at a higher level than teammate Frenkie de Jong, who has already agreed to join Barcelona this summer. The midfielder cost the Spanish side £75 million, and therefore de Boer feels that de Ligt will be worth even more than that .
