Memphis Depay linked to rival of Manchester United

Memphis Depay linked to rival of Manchester United

Odds fall below EVENS for Memphis Depay to join Liverpool

As more quotes indicate that he wants a move this summer, Memphis Depay continues to look more likely to leave the Groupama Stadium. It was previously Manchester United and Manchester City who appeared as favourites to sign Depay, but another team has now moved into pole position for his signature.

The winger has presented further ability in primarily playing as a striker for Lyon during a lot of the campaign, and he’s efficient in any attacking position, with proven skill for finishing as well as assisting the players around him.

An issue that could completely halt any chance of a Premier League club signing the Lyon and Netherlands attacker is how poorly he played during a past stint in England. In two seasons at Old Trafford, Depay only managed two league goals, leading to an unsurprising move elsewhere in 2016.

Three years have passed since that time, and while some would say he hasn’t developed much since that point, he could be capable of causing more of a stir this time around in the same way that Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne both have.

Liverpool in the market for another option in the final third

There’s no doubting the force of Liverpool’s front three, as fifty-six goals and fifteen assists have come in the Premier League from Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino alone.

Constant injuries to Daniel Sturridge have ruined a player that was once so important to Liverpool, so it’s expected that he’ll be moved on this summer. The same could be said for Adam Lallana, and Xherdan Shaqiri has barely featured despite being bought as an alternative to Salah, Mane and Firmino, leaving room for another attacker to join the setup.

Reports hint at Memphis Depay’s current contract having a clause where Manchester United get first refusal on re-signing the player if he decides to leave Lyon, but it hasn’t been enough to put off bookmakers, as Betfair currently price Liverpool as short as 8/11 to sign the Dutchman.

As much as it would be understandable for Premier League clubs to be put off from signing Memphis Depay after he flopped in England before, enough time has passed for it to be worth considering, and it’s not as if Manchester United had many stars at the time, so it could also be a case of the club’s management not allowing the player to work to the best of his abilities.

Manchester United also previously signed Wilfried Zaha to no avail, and he’s now being linked to Arsenal as one of Crystal Palace’s stars following such a poor time at Old Trafford several years ago.
