Middlesbrough in talks to sign free agent John Obi Mikel

Championship side Middlesbrough are currently in negotiations with former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel.

Mikel, 31, is now a free agent after being released by Chinese Super League side Tianjin Teda earlier this month, whom he joined two years ago on a free transfer back in January 2019.

With Middlesbrough currently sat fifth in the Championship table, manager Tony Pulis is looking to boost his squad as they look to secure promotion back to the Premier League. They have already signed Huddersfield winger Rajiv van la Parra on a season-long loan this month.

Mikel previously spent 10-and-a-half years at Stamford Bridge, joining the club in 2006 in one of the more controversial transfers in the modern era, having signed a contract with Manchester United before then moving to Chelsea.

He went on to make 374 appearances for the Blues in all competitions, scoring six goals and became a useful member of the Chelsea squad during that time.

The Nigerian international enjoyed a highly decorated spell with the Londoners, winning two Premier League titles, three FA Cups, the League Cup, Champions League and Europa League.

Currently six points behind second-placed Norwich City, Boro are still well and truly in the race for the automatic promotion places and are unbeaten in each of their last four games in the Championship.
