Odds for these five FA Cup third round shocks as high as 17159/1

This weekend saw the FA Cup third round take centre stage and as ever, there have been upsets aplenty.

The competition has a tradition of smaller clubs upsetting the so called big boys and this weekend – Sunday in particular – lived up to that billing. And a bet on five of the upsets which took place this weekend would have provided odds as high as 17159/1.

The first major upset came on Saturday when League One side Gillingham beat Premier League outfit Cardiff City at Priestfield thanks to a second half goal from Elliott List. The Gills were priced at 3/1 before the match to claim the scalp, but produced a measured performance to dispose of Neil Warnock’s men.

As previously mentioned though, it was Sunday where most of the shocks game with three coming in the 2pm fixtures. At Bramall Lane the last remaining Non League side Barnet stunned their hosts Sheffield United, beating the Blades 1-0 thanks to a Shaquile Coulthirst penalty. Chris Wilder made 10 changes to his team for the match but made no excuses for his team, whilst also congratulating Barnet for their outstanding performance. Prior to the match the Bees were as high as 12/1 with some bookmakers just to win.

Another shock came at Craven Cottage where League Two club Oldham Athletic managed to claim a 2-1 victory against Fulham of the Premier League. The Latics even went 1-0 down in the game after Denis Odoi scored, before equalising through loanee Sam Surridge. It looked as though it may not be Oldham’s day when the Cottagers were awarded a penalty shortly after, but when Aleksandar Mitrovic saw his effort brilliantly saved by Daniel Iversen the upset was on once again. And sure enough just minutes later Callum Lang found a late winner, sending lifelong fan and current caretaker boss Pete Wild bananas. You could back Oldham at around 7/1 to win the match before kick-off.

Doncaster Rovers also produced an upset of sorts, although not quite as high profile as the matches above. The League One side, who are chasing a play-off place, secured a 3-1 away win against Championship outfit Preston North End thanks to goals from John Marquis, Tom Anderson and Mallik Wilks. A Doncaster Rovers win was 11/4 pre-match.

Perhaps the biggest scalp of the round however came in the late kick-offs on Sunday as League Two side Newport County stunned the club sitting in seventh place in the Premier League, Leicester City. Jamille Matt opened the scoring for the Exiles after just 10 minutes and they managed to keep the score 1-0 for the next 72 minutes of the match. However when Rachid Ghezzal equalised with just eight minutes left, it looked as though the Foxes had avoided the embarrassment of losing to a side 74 places below them in the English football pyramid. But they were wrong, just three minutes later Marc Albrighton handled inside the box to give away a penalty, Padriag Amond stepped up and confidently scored to send Newport into round four. To say the odds were stacked against the Welsh side is an understatement, with them being priced at 10/1 pre-match to win in 90 minutes.

The magic of the FA Cup is still there, certainly for those who backed the upsets. One customer with Sky Bet did just that, backing a winning. treble of Barnet, Doncaster Rovers and Oldham Athletic at 404/1 (see below). If you had an accumulator of all five major upsets (Gillingham, Barnet, Doncaster, Oldham and Newport) then you could have got ridiculous odds of 17159/1 – did anybody out there?
