Mohamed Salah now favourite for Golden Boot after Harry Kane injury

There is a new favourite to be the Premier League’s top goalscorer after this weekends events.

Prior to the last round of fixtures Harry Kane was the favourite to win the golden boot with the bookmakers, with odds at around 2/1. However, with him failing to score against Manchester United and also limping off the pitch with a potential injury, he has now drifted to 3/1 with Mohamed Salah the new favourite.

The Egyptian, who was the top scorer in the Premier League in the 2017/18 season, netted his 14th goal of the campaign on Saturday in Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Brighton meaning he is now level with both Kane and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. That, combined with Kane’s potential injury lay-off has seen bookies including Sky Bet cut his odds from around 5/2 to 6/4.

Harry Kane has 14 goals this season, but could be set for a spell on the sidelines.

It remains unknown how long Kane will be out for, with the swelling around his ankle yet to go down so he hasn’t had a scan. According to the Guardian however, Kane himself fears that he could miss around a month of action, which would give both Salah and Aubameyang the opportunity to get ahead of him in the race for the golden boot.

His manager Mauricio Pochettino was also fearful immediately after Spurs 1-0 defeat to Manchester United. Speaking about Kane’s injury he said: “It was a bad tackle and now he has bit of a swelling on his ankle.”

If he does miss a month, that would mean that Salah has games against Crystal Palace, Leicester City, West Ham United and AFC Bournemouth to build up a lead ahead of the England striker. Meanwhile Aubameyang has two tough games against Chelsea and Manchester City, but that is mixed in with games against Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town who you would expect him to score against.

By the time Kane returns to fitness he could find himself a few goals behind both men, whilst the likes of Eden Hazard and Sergio Aguero, both on 10 goals, could force themselves into contention too. One thing looks certain, there should be a real race for the golden boot between a few different players this season.
