Will AC Milan choose to replace Gennaro Gattuso as manager?

During yet another topsy-turvy season for AC Milan, Gennaro Gattuso was looking likely to get the side back into the Champions League through resulting in the top four of the Serie A.

The January signing of prolific Genoa striker Krzysztof Piatek helped their cause, leading to an impressive run of results since the start of 2019, but losing to Inter Milan in the derby has put them back to square one, seeing them without a win in their last four and reverting back to old habits.

Most fans of the club are seeing it as a blip in a mostly promising campaign, but for those who are nervous over how the disappointment could continue, there are some calls for Gennaro Gattuso to leave his position, with bookmakers providing their own next AC Milan manager odds.

Reported disagreements between Gennaro Gattuso and AC Milan Sporting Director Leonardo have apparently been enough to ruin the manager’s chances of staying at the club regardless of whether or not they clinch Champions League football for next season.

Paddy Power are the first bookmaker to price up preliminary next permanent AC Milan manager odds, and – unlike a lot of football manager odds – most of the current options on offer are believable and likely to come into fruition if Gattuso leaves his post.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino a surprising favourite for AC Milan manager

Easily the biggest surprise when the next AC Milan manager odds were first released, Mauricio Pochettino is favourite to take on the role at odds as short as 5/2.

Back in the Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur are fourth after previously looking worthy of cementing third or even challenging Liverpool and Manchester City for the title.

Although they’ve fallen away in recent attempts to finish as high up in the Premier League as possible, it’s difficult to envisage an outcome where Mauricio Pochettino leaves Spurs, especially after the club recently completed the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, gearing them up to compete among Europe’s elite over future years.

Defeating Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League made them appear to be a more formidable side than they’re given credit for being, but with odds constantly dropping on any hopes of winning a trophy this season, Mauricio Pochettino is continuously unable to show success at the club, potentially pushing him towards the exit door.

Following the shock appearance of Poch, Antonio Conte is given a 3/1 price despite being linked to local derby rivals Inter Milan, Arsene Wenger is priced at 11/2 after being a likely candidate for AC Milan manager over a lengthy period, former boss Carlo Ancelotti is priced at 7/1, and Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri is expected to return to Serie A at odds of 9/1.

Mauricio Pochettino Spurs

It’s hard to imagine that Mauricio Pochettino would leave Spurs after they recently opened their new stadium, but he’s always linked to Europe’s biggest clubs.

Gian Piero Gasperini looking like a clever option at 14/1

When the odds move above the 10/1 mark, one option is extremely tempting in Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini, who has worked wonders since becoming manager of the Nerazzurri in 2016.

Priced at 14/1, Gian Piero Gasperini would be a clever appointment at AC Milan, and it wouldn’t be the first time he’s been linked to larger jobs in Italy after being a candidate for the Italy national team manager before former Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini took on the job.

His first season resulted in a fourth place finish, massively overachieving, followed by a less impressive seventh place finish in the Serie A. Now in his third season, Atalanta are fifth and level on points with AC Milan in the place above, with Gasperini calmly looking to snatch AC Milan’s Champions League place from underneath them.

Unbeaten in their last seven over all competitions, Atalanta constantly go under the radar, but fans of Italian football will be aware of how difficult they are to play, calculated in defence and threatening in attack through Alejandro Gomez, Josip Ilicic, and Serie A second top scorer Duvan Zapata.

Gian Piero Gasperini Atalanta

Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini would be a shrewd appointment based on his tenure at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia.

Former AC Milan icons linked to replace Gattuso

A common trend among the next AC Milan manager odds has been to see former players and managers that possess history with the club being linked to the job.

We’ve already briefly touched upon Carlo Ancelotti at 7/1, who remains as one of the world’s most decorated managers, notably winning the Serie A with AC Milan as well as claiming two UEFA Champions League wins with the club. He’s currently at Napoli, but there’d be nothing stopping him from leaving the Stadio San Paolo, especially if he returns to a club where he was once beloved by the fans.

All of Rafa Benitez (18/1), Jose Mourinho (25/1) and Diego Simeone (25/1) share a controversial tie in both Benitez and Mourinho being manager of local derby rivals Internazionale, and Diego Simeone formerly playing for Inter. Rafa Benitez is unsettled at Newcastle, putting him down to join even unlikely teams, making him a possibility for the AC Milan job, and Jose Mourinho has also been tipped for the Inter Milan job. Diego Simeone is the only man unlikely to consider the role due to his growing empire at Atletico Madrid.

Another option could be current Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri at 20/1, who previously managed AC Milan prior to their downfall. He’s dipped in and out of being favourite to become next Inter Milan manager, but a return to the red side of the San Siro would arguably be more probable with only a few names tied to the AC Milan manager job.

Former Rossoneri alumni are given individual prices, Andriy Shevchenko at 25/1, Alessandro Nesta at 33/1, Filippo Inzaghi at 50/1, and Paolo Maldini also at odds of 50/1. It’s not totally inconceivable for a former AC Milan player to take on the role, Gennaro Gattuso current manager and Leonardo working as Sporting Director, but with aforementioned problems between Leonardo and Gattuso, they might opt to avoid a similar confrontation in their next appointment.

Paolo Maldini AC Milan

Paolo Maldini is an AC Milan legend, so players at the club would certainly get behind him as manager.
