Who will replace Ryan Lowe as the next Bury manager?

It looks set to be an extremely turbulent summer for League One side Bury, who must now try and find a new manager after Ryan Lowe’s departure.

The former striker did an unbelievable job and guided the club to promotion from League Two, despite their well documented financial troubles. But he has opted to leave Gigg Lane and join Plymouth Argyle in the division below, mainly due to the Shakers’ off-field issues.

Players and staff have often gone unpaid in recent months and the club have even faced a winding-up petition. It is no surprise that he has chosen to make the move, with Plymouth much better run off the pitch right now meaning they are a much more attractive proposition than the cash-strapped Shakers, even if they are in a lower league.

The big question now is what next for Bury? They will need a new manager for the 2019/20 campaign, but can they realistically attract anyone decent with their current instability? We have taken a look at the odds to see who the bookies think could potentially become the next manager at the club.

Ryan Lowe Bury

Ryan Lowe led Bury to League Two promotion before opting to join Plymouth Argyle this summer.

Favourites Bernard Morley and Anthony Johnson rule themselves out

According to the bookmakers, Chester co-managers Bernard Morley and Anthony Johnson are the favourites to take over at Gigg Lane, with Sky Bet offering odds of 1/1.

The duo have been in charge of the National League North outfit since May 2018 having previously managed Salford City. They have forged a solid reputation managing in Non League, earning three promotions with Salford and finishing a respectable ninth in their first season with Chester.

This has led to some journalists linking them with the vacant manager’s job at at Bury, but they have since denied any links with the position.

“Look, we are from Bury and I’m a Bury fan so it’s not that hard to see where the link comes from,” said Johnson.

“We’ve not spoken to anyone and the club haven’t spoken to anyone. Even if they wanted us we are contracted football managers and the club would require compensation.

“People love linking names to jobs but we aren’t in the running for the job and me and Bernard are focused on what comes next here at Chester. We’ve put a lot of work into what next season would look like and we’re really excited for it, probably more so than any season I can remember.”

Both also took to their personal Twitter accounts to further deny the rumours. It is therefore questionable as to why they remain favourites with the bookmakers for the job.

Could Keith Hill be the next Bury manager?

The other strong favourite according to the odds is Keith Hill, who is priced at 7/4. He has been out of work since being sacked by Rochdale in March following six years in charge at Spotland, but it thought to be keen on a return to management ahead of the new season.

Hill is a very experienced manager at League One level which will appeal to Bury, and enjoyed plenty of success at Rochdale including leading them to two of the three promotions in their history.

Moving to Bury may well suit him too. He is Lancashire born and bred so he wouldn’t need to relocate, just as he didn’t when he joined Barnsley (his only other managerial job).

The big question mark would be whether he feels he can do a job with the club despite their financial instabilities heading into the 2019/20 campaign. He didn’t have huge finances at Rochdale, but behind the scenes they were a lot better run and he may feel that a more attractive opportunity will come up if he waits a little longer.
