Next Carlisle Manager odds

Carlisle last night parted company with manager Steven Pressley after just under a year at the club.

Pressley leaves the Cumbria outfit 18th in League 2, 5 points above the drop zone.

The timing of the sacking may seem a little strange as they were 2-1 winners over Macclesfield in the league last week before progressing through to the second round of the FA Cup.

However, Tuesday’s 3-1 defeat at Northampton in the EFL trophy was enough for the Carlisle board to pull the plug.

Pressley took over last season with the side sixth, but they fell to 11th by the end of the season. The club made 14 new signings in the summer, but results haven’t been great.

So, for the second season in a row they are on the hunt for a new manager so let’s have a look how Sky Bet have priced up the new manager odds.

Ex-Player leads market

Former Carlisle payer Andy Welsh heads the betting at 7/2. He spent two years at Carlisle between 2011 and 2013 and is currently the manager of Yorkshire side, Ossett United, who ply their trade in the Northern Premier League.

The move would be a massive risk for Carlisle to take, with Welsh only having managed Ossett and a move to Carlisle would be a huge step up for someone that has only managed in the Northern League.

However, is two years at Brunton Park could prove invaluable, in regard to his knowledge about the club and in his playing days was a journeyman and did play in the Premier League for Sunderland so his general understanding of the game could count in his favour.

It might be a bit of a surprise to see him top of the market based on his managerial experience, but he is obviously held in some sort of regard still at the club and he would no doubt take the offer if it came calling.

Bridges and Skelton next in

Next in at 2/1 is former Leeds and Sunderland striker Michael Bridges. The 41-year-old is yet to manage yet and is looking for his first venture into the role.

Bridges’ link to the job isn’t surprising, having expressed interest in the role prior to Pressley’s appointment and Carlisle could be the ideal starting point.

Again, the issue will be his experience, but it seems Carlisle may be going down the route of someone young rather than the tried and tested.

Following him is Gavin Skelton, with the 38-year-old 4/1 to take over the reins at Brunton Park.

This maybe represents some value; Skelton is currently the assistant manager and has already been put in charge of the team this week for the trip to Port Vale on Saturday. A positive result will do him no harm, and should that continue, it would be no surprise for him to be given the job, at least until the end of the season.

Skelton spent three years at the club as a player so clearly knows the club and he knows the playing staff too; the move would make a lot of sense.

Outside shots

Former Bolton and Newcastle midfielder Kevin Nolan is 8/1 with Sky Bet for the gig. He will be a more recognisable name to punters, and he has managerial experience within the Football League, having managed both Leyton Orient and Notts County, where he was sacked last season.

Paul Hickingbottom was recently sacked from Hibbs and could bring valuable experience having managed in the SPL, he is a 10/1 chance whilst it’s 15/1 for former Burnley and Bolton manager Owen Coyle.
