Sunday’s 5-2 hammering by Celtic in the League Cup semi-final was the final nail in the coffin for Paul Heckingbottom, who was sacked as Hibs on Monday.

The sacking should come as no surprise, Hibs beat bottom of the table St Mirren on the opening day of the season and haven’t won since, with the Edinburgh outfit 10th in the league with nine points.

Heckingbottom was appointed Hibs manager at the start of 2019 following Neil Lennon’s departure to Celtic and guided the club to fifth place in last year’s SPL however the start to this season has been a stark contrast and it seems the board have become fed up.

In his last SPL game, he oversaw his side come from 2-0 to draw 2-2 at home to Livingston, a fifth successive draw and promoted him to launch an attack on his players in the press conference after the game.

Hibs are now looking for a new manager and we look at the Sky Bet odds for Heckingbottom’s replacement.

Market suggesting a one horse race

If you are to believe the betting, there is just one man set for the job and that is Jack Ross who is the short 4/9 take over the reins in the Scottish capital.

Ross was recently sacked by League One Sunderland after what they considered start to the season. He took over at the Stadium of Light last season and led the club to the Play-Off final where they were beaten by Charlton.

Ross is no stranger to Scottish football, having led St Mirren to Championship success in the 2017/18 season however has never managed in the SPL.

There will be question marks to whether he has the ability to do it in the highest league and whether the job will come too soon for him after being sacked by Sunderland however it would be a smooth enough deal in that he is out of work and the short odds clearly suggest he is in favour amongst the Hibs board.

Whilst Ross was sacked by Sunderland, it is important to stress he was sacked with the club just outside the playoff positions, which some may deem harsh.

Long odds for the others

With Ross being as short as he is, it means the rest are marginally bigger than what we would usually see in a manager market.

Sky Bet have John Doolan next in at 7/1. The 50-year-old is currently a First Team coach at League One Accrington Stanley and spent two years as a coach at Hibbs when Alan Stubbs was manager, so clearly knows the club well but has never actually managed himself.

Former manager Stubbs also features in the betting, the ex-Everton defender is 10/1 to make a return to Easter Road, where he spent two seasons and is remembered for winning the Scottish League Cup. Stubbs is out of work since leaving St Mirren in September 2018, having only spent three months there and there could be some value in his price against Ross.

A surprising name in the betting is Nathan Jones, who is 8/1 to make a quick return to management, having been sacked by Stoke only last week.

Prior to his tenure at Stoke, Jones was at Luton where guided to club to promotion from League two and left them second in League One before moving to Stoke where was sacked after less than a year after arriving and would most likely be seeking another job in the football league.

The outsiders

With Jack Ross being so short, the others following are fairly large odds and the outsiders are even bigger but there a few interesting names.

Former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher makes the frame, he is 16/1 to make dip his toe into the management world after retirement but would be a risky appointment in a relegation battle.

The rest of the betting is filled with numerous ex-players and journeyman managers, including ex Norwich forward Grant Holt, making the frame at 16/1 but it seems to be only one man in contention to fill the vacant dugout position at Easter Road.
