Who will replace Chris Powell as the next Southend United manager?

Southend United are on the lookout for a new first team manager after sacking Chris Powell.

The decision to part company with the former Charlton Athletic and Huddersfield Town boss comes after he led the Shrimpers on a run of 11 matches without a victory. That has seen them get dragged into the 13-club strong League One relegation battle and they currently lie in 20th place, outside the relegation zone on goal difference alone.

In a club statement via their official website, Southend United said: “The results over a number of weeks has impacted all concerned and immediate changes needed to be made. The club’s interests are paramount, but the board are nevertheless disappointed to see Chris leave.”

The 49-year-old was only at the club for 14 months having joined in January 2018, and leaves with a 36.36% winning record having won 24 of his 66 games in charge. The head of the club’s academy Ricky Duncan will take temporary charge until they appoint a permanent successor.

So who will take over at Roots Hall? We’ve taken a look at the bookmakers odds to see who the favourites are to replace Powell as the next Southend United manager.

Chris Powell Southend United

Chris Powell lost his job as Southend United manager following a run of 11 games without a victory.

Adam Barrett the early favourite to become next Southend manager

The favourite with bookmakers to get the job at Roots Hall is a man well known at the club, Adam Barrett. The 39-year-old enjoyed two spells as a player at Southend United, clocking up over 300 appearances and scoring 33 goals despite being a defender.

He helped them win promotion from League Two twice in 2005 and 2015, whilst also being a key member of the team which won the League One title in the 2005/06 season. Barrett is therefore well thought of at the club and would probably be a popular appointment amongst the fan base.

Since retiring in 2016 he has been earning his stripes as a first team development coach at Millwall, so if he were to get the Southend managers job it would be his first experience being the main man in the dugout. It would though be a risk appointing a rookie manager considering the relegation trouble the club currently finds itself in.

That said, Sky Bet are currently offering odds of 6/4 for Barrett to become the next permanent Southend United manager.

Other manager’s in contention for the Southend job

Ryan Duncan is the second favourite with bookmakers to become the next permanent Southend United manager, with odds of 6/1 with Sky Bet. As already mentioned he has been appointed as the temporary manager at Roots Hall, and if he can pull together a couple of strong results in the next few weeks then he may be offered the opportunity of continuing long-term.

Then come former Notts County manager Kevin Nolan and Steve Evans, most recently of Peterborough United who are both priced at 7/1. Whilst it would be a step up for Nolan (assuming Southend stay up) having only ever managed in League Two, the experience that Evans possesses in League One could attract the Shrimpers to him. Indeed he has won promotion from the third tier with Rotherham United and had Peterborough in the play-off race earlier this season before being dismissed.

Paul Hurst is at 8/1, although the former Shrewsbury Town manager is also heavily fancied to become the next Scunthorpe United manager too. Lee Clark and Gary Rowett are both priced at 12/1, whilst former Bristol Rovers boss Darrell Clarke can be backed at odds of 14/1.
