Odds shortening on Rangers to win the SPL – Will this finally be their year?

Steven Gerrard’s men have gone from 8/1 outsiders to as short as 3/1 with some bookmakers

Rangers fans have been given plenty to smile about this season under Steven Gerrard, and it’s now becoming a real possibility that the Gers could end Celtic’s seven-year long domination of the division this time around.

Currently sat second in the league – level on points with Brendan Rodgers’ outfit – Rangers have been ruthless in front of goal this term, netting 43 goals whilst conceding just 16 in return.

Rangers have lost only three league games thus far, winning 12 and drawing three of their 21 SPL fixtures since early-August. The Scottish titans also impressed in the Europa League before bowing out in the group stage phase just before Christmas, memorably coming from behind twice to draw 2-2 with La Liga side Villarreal away from home in September.

Gerrard has this Rangers side playing some fantastic football this season; with players like James Tavenier, Scott Arfield and Alfredo Morelos all flourishing in his favoured 4-1-4-1 system. The latter, 22-year-old Columbian front man Morelos, has notched 20 goals in 34 appearances (all competitions) so far and looks to be a real prospect for the Scottish club moving forward.

Steven Gerrard has got his side playing some fantastic football this term.

Morelos will now be partnered by proven goal machine Jermain Defoe following his loan move from Bournemouth earlier this month. Defoe, who played alongside manager Steven Gerrard for England, is one of the deadliest marksmen in the game and despite now entering the twilight stages of a glistening career, will almost certainly prove to be a real asset in the much less demanding Scottish Premier League.

Since their re-introduction to the SPL back in 2016/17, Rangers have massively fallen short of the quality required to compete with arch rivals Celtic, losing 5-0, 4-0 and 5-1 (twice) to the Bhoys in the past three seasons alone. This season however, the two titans of Scottish football have been on a much more level playing field, both recording 1-0 victories over each other, so it’s going to be extremely interesting to see who comes out on top come the end of the campaign.

Having started the season as 8/1 outsiders to lift the SPL title, Rangers have now seen their odds shorten to 3/1 with most bookmakers. However, William Hill are offering them slightly higher at odds of 10/3. Celtic on the other hand have seen there odds to win the title halved – they’re still favourites to go the distance at odds of 1/5, however started the campaign at 1/10.

Who do you think will run out as winners come April?
